You know it's a good read when you park the car but keep listening until you realize you gotta get going. Good dialog, good story, look forward to the next.
....narrated by Captain Black Jack Sparrow you'll like this one. The voice/style is off-putting at first; I felt the writing would be better served by a less cartoonish read, but after a while it got entertaining by itself.
I suppose this is geared toward adolescents for whom this might be fun, but there are many references a 50-something year old will recognize - lots of things named after Apollo astronauts, Star Trek, 70's figures (Kasparov, Clouseau) and even a nod to Dancing With The Stars.
I made it almost all the way through, but what was entertaining became annoying and I left it with a few hours remaining. Narration style aside, the story and writing just aren't very good. I was hoping for more.
I frequently sat in the driveway after arriving home, unwilling to turn the car off, engrossed in the story. Although the science fiction is great, (highly advanced, mysterious alien technology and a reasonably feasible not-too-distant-future human asteroid mining ship, woven with relativistic effects and other actual science as the story proceeds), the hook is the personal story of 2 close friends whose relationship is strained to breaking by events. I liked John Lee's narration, falling short only in his attempt at Russian female main character Svetlana. Just never worked for me but not so bad that I didn't enjoy it. Look forward to checking out other books by this author and narrator.
This was a fun listen, especially for a food-loving science geek. Along the journey, the author debunks old wives tales and "commonly-known" tidbits alike but never in a condescending way. Humor is always at the ready and I often came away thinking, wow, that's cool, never knew that. The structure is by way of answers to common questions like, "How does a microwave heat water"? Mostly things you think you already know but as I learned, not always so. I liked the narrator's pacing and delivery too. I'm inclined to check out other books by this writer.
