After reading Blood Work I wanted to give Connelly another go. I think I broke my all time record for completing an unabridged novel with this one. If it were a book I'd say I couldn't put it down. Since it was a cold and dreary weekend, I was satisfied to just sit back and enjoy. I'm still not sure what role the rookie cop, Julia Brasher, had to do with anything except fill. I kept wondering what she had to do with the plot. I guess Connelly figured he needed a cute young woman in there to spice it up. I do recommend this book regardless.
If you just want to relax and be entertained then this is the book. After reading a lot of non fiction, intense dramas and mystery novels I was ready for some light entertainment. I love Fannie Flagg doing her own narration. Especially her southern twang. Also many of the thoughts of the main character were similar to my own in many ways.
Not often do I just want a book to end. The whole premise of this story is preposterous. The author stretched what could have been a good read into a book with the most unbelievable sub plots. Each time he threw another one in I was wondering where on earth he going to go with it. At the end I felt like I had just listened to science fiction instead of a good mystery novel. I give it two thumbs down just because he turned a good story into something so farfetched it was laughable.
If you are not prepared to listen to the author go on and on about yoga and meditation, Hinduism, Buddhism, then bypass this book. I got so tired of the preachiness of her transcendental experiences that I just had to quit. This book should be in the religions section. This is only the second book that I just gave up on, ever. As a Christian I tried very hard to keep an open mind, but I just couldn't take it anymore.
The book was just not what I expected when I ordered it. It was plain and ordinary. I was surprised by nothing, and saw every turn from around the corner. Just wanted to finish it so I could select something a little meatier.
This book was so boring, I used it to put me to sleep at night. The narrator's voice just could not do a 30's something man and a young boy. He sounded more like a grandfather. It was the same thing over and over. Almost like groundhog day. Walk in the rain, search for food, find shelter, build a fire, decide who is going to hold the gun with the two bullets. Find an empty house, use what you can, take what you can, then head back to the road and do it all again the next day, and the next day, ad nauseum.
I should have taken some of the reviewers more seriously. What a waste of a book credit. All I can say is the book is "dumb" and the ending even "dumber".
I enjoyed the plot (even though I saw almost everything coming), but the explicit and graphic sex turned me OFF. It was totally unnecessary. If I wanted to read graphic porn I go to an adult store. With a book you can turn the pages to avoid all the graphic sexual descriptions, with an audio player you're stuck with it because you don't know when it ends. None of the "porn" added to the story at all. I was disappointed.
An interesting telling of the life of an Irish immigrant to the U.S. Sometimes very detailed, sometimes difficult to understand the author's accent. But I also found that having the person telling his story in his own accent a bonus. Being from the west coast I found myself getting an east coast education. And as a former teacher I found myself chuckling when he described his tribulations as a teacher. Times haven't changed much in education.
I thoroughly enjoyed the telling of this sport span of white collar crime in a person so young. It is truly unbelievable that a mere teenager could have pulled off so much and fooled so many. The narrator kept my attention throughout. Although I had already viewed the film, I found the book so much more entertaining. If you saw the movie and liked it, I recommend that you follow up your experience with this book.
