I am in the middle of this book, and don't want it to end. The characters are fascinating, the writing is superb. At first I didn't like the narrator, but now I think he does a great job.
Everything: characters, plot, narration.
Lot of twists and turns. Hard to stop listening.
The red sparrow.
Intelligent spy thriller
Other books I've liked, so readers can get a sense of my taste: Gone Girl, Suspect, Guilty Wives, Witness, The Unlikely Spy, Cutting for Stone, most Daniel Silva, most John Le Carre. I wish other reviewers would put their top likes as well.
I haven't read Allende for years, and I was totally enchanted by this book. The characters were beautifully portrayed. The book is an epic, following a number of generations and the history of Haiti which is itself fascinating.
As a lover of good science fiction, I appreciate Niffenegger's intelligent and playful handling of the causality conundrum innate to time travel stories. As an appreciator of original writing style I was carried along by her well-paced prose and literary Easter eggs. As a long time lover of audio books, I found the readings by Burns and Reed evocative, humorous and tragic by turns. As the husband of a University of Chicago alumnus I saw the locales of that city come alive.
The best way to listen to this book is to go through it once yourself and then listen to the whole thing again with your lover. Then you can, just as Henry does, answer the inevitable "What's going to happen?" with "Sorry, I can't tell you..." Believe me, the second time through, you'll make connections whose enrichment of the story makes it totally worthwhile.
Not only does this volume contain the most moving naval chase sequence in the entire Aubrey/Maturin series (against the Dutch 74-gun Waakzaamheid), but it is the beginning of an international intrigue of Steven's that eventually leads (in Fortune of War) to his getting back together with Diana Villiers. These two together comprise the most coherent story telling of the series. Kudos to Audible for bringing aboard the original unabridged recordings. Keep them coming!
