In these six new pieces Alan Bennett retains the gripping stories, intensity of delivery, and masterly style of his original monologues. The suburban normality of the world his characters inhabit once again belies their lives of secrets, revelations, fears, crimes, and passions. They tell their stories, and in doing so reveal more than they know of the humour, passion, and sadness of their lives.

    Die Falknerin says: "Outstanding performances"
    "Excellent"
    Overall

The perfect blend of tragi-comedy from the pen of one of England's best writers, delivered by the cream of the UK's acting profession. Unmissable.

It's back: the Radio 4 panel game that's not about sport, music, television, advertising, books, hats, or gardening, just funny rounds with funny ideas. Written by Kevin Cecil and Andy Riley, who won a BAFTA award for writing Robbie the Reindeer for Aardman Animations, the show is hosted by the glorious Sue Perkins (of Mel & Sue fame).

This is a kind of "alternative" version of "I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue" - great guests, extremely well presented by Sue Perkins, and very very funny!

Summer 1924: On the eve of a glittering Society party, by the lake of a grand English country house, a young poet takes his life. The only witnesses, sisters Hannah and Emmeline Hartford, will never speak to each other again....Winter 1999: Grace Bradley, 98, one-time housemaid of Riverton Manor, is visited by a young director making a film about the poet's suicide. Ghosts awaken, and memories, long consigned to the dark reaches of Grace's mind, begin to sneak back through the cracks.

    Cathy says: "superbly written mystery"
    "Slow and oddly accented"
    Overall

This is a very slow listen, and not a lot happens for long stretches at a time - however, it does make a nice change to do a slow book from time to time - but my major gripe is with the narrator - the book is extremely well read and easy to listen to, but why does she start with an English accent and then give up after an hour or so and slip back into Australian? It's very bizarre listening to her reading Cockney parts with a broad Aussie twang! However, in summary - gentle and undemanding - good for the early mornings.

Haunted by Chuck Palahniuk is a novel made up of stories: 23 of them, to be precise. Twenty-three of the most horrifying, hilarious, mind-blowing, stomach-churning tales you'll ever encounter, sometimes all at once. They are told by people who have answered an ad headlined "Writers' Retreat: Abandon Your Life for Three Months", and who are led to believe that here they will leave behind all the distractions of "real life" that are keeping them from creating the masterpiece that is in them.

Dominique says: "True Horror -- Not for the faint of heart, stomach"
    "The darkest humour..."
    Overall

How dark is this book? It's dark. Very dark. Very very dark. You'll need a flashlight to find it. And even once you've found it, you'll need to grit your teeth and clench your stomach. This really is a test of how much twisted horror and humour you can stand, but if you can stand it, it's a real treat. Full marks.

Even four years after the sudden death of his wife, best selling novelist Mike Noonan can't stop grieving, nor can he return to his writing. He moves into his isolated house by the lake, which becomes the site of ghostly visitations, ever-escalating nightmares, and the sudden recovery of his writing ability. What are the forces that have been unleashed here - and what do they want of Mike Noonan?

Michael says: "My Favorite King Novel"
    "Engrossing"
    Overall

A great story deftly told, which is only to be expected from Mr King. If I do have one note of criticism, it's that authors do not necessarily give the best audiobook delivery - perhaps with another reader I'd have given it the full five stars. But don't let this minor point put you off!

This is the original classic story of Bram Stoker's undead monster. It has influenced Western portrayals (including Buffy and Angel) of vampires and vampirism for nearly a century. Even after all this time, Bram Stoker's Dracula remains the undisputed masterpiece of horror writing.

    Glenn says: "Great Listen"
    "Faithful adaptation"
    Overall

Enjoyable, if not slightly stilted in delivery, and some very odd attempts at English accents!
