  • The Monkey's Raincoat: An Elvis Cole Novel

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 9 mins)

    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

When Ellen Lang's husband disappears with their son, she hires Elvis Cole to track him down. A quiet and seemingly submissive wife, Ellen can't even write a check without him. All she wants is to get him and her son back - no questions asked.

John says: "Good book for the first in the series."
    "Abysmal recording quality"
    Overall

The enhanced recording frankly sounds like a poor attempt to resurrect an old, stretched cassette tape pulled out of the mud and run through the dishwasher a couple of times. The narrator is of commensurate (lack of) quality. Disappointing enough to prompt this "review."

  • Catch-22

    Story
    (1124)

Catch-22 is set in the closing months of World War II, in an American bomber squadron on a small island off Italy. Its hero is a bombardier named Yossarian, who is frantic and furious because thousands of people he hasn't even met keep trying to kill him. (He has decided to live forever, even if he has to die in the attempt.)

Phil says: "Phenominal Reading - Story and Damn Funny"
    "Flaws in narration"
    Overall

While the narrator overall does a good job, there are galling instances where he misreads. "Okay, Joe, she purred" is what's written. "Okay Joe, she putted" is what is narrated. Or "first" for "fist." Word for word readings likely are impossible, but when the sense is lost or diverted...

  • Spud

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 29 mins)
    • By John van de Ruit
    • Narrated By Maxwell Caulfield
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready
    Overall

    Story

Armed with only his wits and his diary, Spud takes listeners of all ages on a rowdy boarding-school romp full of illegal midnight swims, raging hormones, and catastrophic holidays that will leave the entire family in total hysterics and thirsty for more.

Kim says: "A really fun book!"
    "1990 Monday 17th January"
    Overall

Rain man here, having issues even starting something that gets the day of the week wrong. Maybe the calendar in SA is non-Gregorian? Woe is me, as 19900117 was a Wednesday.
