The Two Towers is the second volume of J.R.R. Tolkien's epic saga, The Lord of the Rings. The Fellowship has been forced to split up. Frodo and Sam must continue alone towards Mount Doom, where the One Ring must be destroyed. Meanwhile, at Helm’s Deep and Isengard, the first great battles of the War of the Ring take shape. In this splendid, unabridged audio production of Tolkien’s great work, all the inhabitants of a magical universe - hobbits, elves, and wizards - spring to life. Rob Inglis’ narration has been praised as a masterpiece of audio.

As far back as the 60's you seldom saw me without a well dog-eared copy of one of Professor Tolkien's books in my pocket!
I've listened to "the Lord of the Rings (dramatized)" on the radio, tape and Audible - and will, likely do so again. BUT, to follow Frodo, Sam, Merry, Pippin, Gandalf and Aragorn, inch by inch, from the settled land of the Shire to Mordor as they face their many perils is truly a treat! Just close your eyes and be right at their shoulder as they overcome daunting odds!

Arthur Conan Doyle never wasted time in getting his stories moving. His plots are always direct and refreshingly lucid, and the narrative has a velocity that sweeps you along right to the end. This was no doubt a large part of his immense worldwide success. Not surprisingly, each time he tried to end the series, his fans would howl in protest. But, as he says in the preface to his last collection of Sherlock Holmes stories, all good things must come to an end.

I first visited 221B Baker Street around '93 - reading through a paperback edition of the complete stories of Sherlock Holmes. I, then, became a regular visitor through the auspices of Granada films - then a hardcover "Annotated Sherlock Holmes" and, now this excellent 3 volume compilation on Audible.
I, first, began engaging in "A Study in Scarlet" (Volume 1, chapter 1) and followed the clues till I arrived at "Shoscombe Old Place" (Volume 3, chapter 16). Since then I have often skipped through one volume or other till I found an adventure that suited my mood at the time. This 3 volume compilation is among my most frequent listens in my entire library!
For something less daunting to peruse I'd also recommend the Audible book "Sherlock Holmes (Dramatized)", a radio play rendition of 12 adventures and the Patrick Tull renditions of the major Sherlock Holes adventures; "The Hound of the Baskervilles" and such.

Volume two in this series consists of one novel, The Hound of the Baskervilles, and two collections of short stories, which include "Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes" and "The Return of Sherlock Holmes" (a total of 23 stories). These creations by Doyle represent the finest work of his Holmes series, and certainly the most famous.

I'd first visited 221B Baker Street around '93 and then became a regular visitor. First in print - then through the auspices Of Granada films - then "A Baker Street Dozen" and the three volumes of "The Complete Stories of Sherlock Holmes" on Audible. I have listened to them frequently but, on occasion, I've had an interest in, say, visiting Baskerville Hall. So I bought this stand-alone rendition of this and Sir Arthur's other major Holmes episodes rather than fishing through the near eighty hours of those compilations. This rendition stands shoulder to shoulder with that in "the Complete Stories..."!

The Return of the King is the towering climax to J. R. R. Tolkien’s trilogy that tells the saga of the hobbits of Middle-earth and the great War of the Rings. In this concluding volume, Frodo and Sam make a terrible journey to the heart of the Land of the Shadow in a final reckoning with the power of Sauron. In addition to narrating the prose passages, Rob Inglis sings the trilogy’s songs and poems a capella, using melodies composed by Inglis and Claudia Howard, the Recorded Books studio director.

Like every other hobbit, Bilbo Baggins likes nothing better than a quiet evening in his snug hole in the ground, dining on a sumptuous dinner in front of a fire. But when a wandering wizard captivates him with tales of the unknown, Bilbo becomes restless. Soon he joins the wizard’s band of homeless dwarves in search of giant spiders, savage wolves, and other dangers. Bilbo quickly tires of the quest for adventure and longs for the security of his familiar home. But before he can return to his life of comfort, he must face the greatest threat of all.

The Fellowship is broken; the quest to destroy the Ring seems already shrouded in disaster. But as the evil lord Sauron readies his armies for war, Frodo and Sam continue their lonely journey toward Mordor, guided only by Gollum, a deceitful and tortured creature, helplessly in thrall to the Ring's dark power.

"The Hobbit (Dramatized)" and "the Lord of the Rings (Dramatized)" were the first books I bought through Audible. I'd heard this recounting on the radio and owned cassettes of them back in the 70's and was eager to rehear them in this format - which I have done several times.
I've been a fan of the good Professor's books since the mid 60's and account this rendition to be a VERY close "second" to the books, themselves, and the unabridged rendition now available!
They are an excellent telling and well worth purchasing!

War rages in the west, a titanic battle of will and strategy between the great wizard Gandalf and Sauron, the dark lord. Meanwhile, eastward in Mordor, Frodo and Sam approach the end of their improbable quest, bearing the One Ring ever closer to the Cracks of Doom, and to a final confrontation with the very essence of evil.

In the ancient lands of Middle-earth, a place of elves and dwarves, Orcs and wizards, the darkest evil and the brightest good, a hobbit named Frodo Baggins embarks on a perilous quest: to carry the One Ring, ruler of all the Rings of Power, into the shadowy land of Mordor and destroy it in the fires where it was forged.
