In this riveting collection of true crime stories from the files of award-winning journalist and New York Times best-selling author of 32 books M. William Phelps, someone tries to pin a gruesome murder on a horse, infamous serial killer Son of Sam shows us his true evil nature in a series of lost letters this psychopath never wanted you to see, and Sesame Street's Big Bird comes home to find a dead woman on his estate. These join several other tales only a master storyteller like Phelps can bring to life for listeners.

    M. Williams Phelps seems to use his books as a venue in which to advertise his writings and promote himself. His insertions about himself are not what I need to hear about in a true crime book. I am interested in the crime, the criminal and the surrounding story.

Good stories. Interesting characters. But I couldn't get past the first book. Mikela Drew did a good job narrating. Ramona Drew's sugary, juvenile reading was unbearable. Who picks such narrators for books like this? Had Mikela Drew done the whole trilogy, I'd have given four stars for the performance.

It is 1940 and a tragedy sends Lou and her little brother, Oz, along with their invalid mother, from New York City to the rugged mountains of Southwest Virginia to live with their great-grandmother. The story is told with both heartbreaking elegance and large doses of touching humor as the lives of Lou and Oz are changed forever.

If the Bouvier women personified beauty, style, and fashion, it was their lust for money and status that drove them to seek out powerful men, no matter what the cost to themselves or to those they stepped on in their ruthless climb to the top. Based on hundreds of new interviews with friends and family of the Bouviers, among them their own half brother, as well as letters and journals, J. Randy Taraborrelli paints an extraordinary psychological portrait of two famous sisters and their ferociously ambitious mother.

The super sugary narration, the excessive details (name of the owner, company, type of airplane, etc. for a flight??), multiple details about style, fabric, color, etc. of each room, who wore what again with all the details. I am not a Kennedy fan but thought the book might be of interest. I, too, was a sudden, unexpected widow with children to raise so I was interested in that aspect of the book. I also remember vividly the assassination and a nation in mourning. It was a tremendously jarring point in our history but at the half-way point in this book I can't take listening to this anymore. Maybe another time.

Ellie Brown thought she'd finally escaped her stifling hometown of Broadlands, Illinois; med school was supposed to be her ticket out. But when her father has a stroke, she must return home to share his care with her older sister, Amelia, who's busy with her own family. Working as a paramedic, Ellie's days are monotonous, driving an ambulance through streets she'd hoped never to see again.

Too many words. Over emoting. Another female using emotion instead of common sense, brains and the training she has been given to do her job as an EMT. And once again a man comes along to save the day. Sigh. What is it with these female writers? Do they think they are doing justice to their gender? Instead they are portraying them as immature idiots. Sorry I bought this book.

  • My Sweet Angel: The True Story of Lacey Spears, the Seemingly Perfect Mother Who Murdered Her Son in Cold Blood

Lacey Spears made international headlines in January 2015, when she was charged with the "depraved mind" murder of her five-year-old son, Garnett. Prosecutors alleged that the 27-year-old mother had poisoned him with high concentrations of salt through his stomach tube. To the outside world, Lacey had seemed like the perfect mother, regularly posting dramatic updates on her son's harrowing medical problems. But in reality, Lacey was a textbook case of Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy.

A good story, well-written. Why on earth pick a British narrator for a book written about the American South? Rapid fire delivery with many words run together. Some interesting pronunciations not related to his country of origin. Try the written version instead.

Shirley Wolf and Cindy Collier met in a juvenile detention center and had known each other for only a few hours when they decided to escape and randomly kill a stranger. They would go to a senior condominium center in Auburn, California, where they would seek an elderly victim. They would find one in the 85-year-old Anna Brackett. They entered her home under the ruse that they needed to use the phone to call their parents.

Even if this book were free, don't bother. The headline says it all except to add that the narration is the absolute worst I've ever heard which is saying a lot. The quality of narrators has declined considerably since I began listening to Audible in about 2008.

All Denny Malone wants is to be a good cop. He is the "King of Manhattan North", a highly decorated NYPD detective sergeant and the real leader of "Da Force". Malone and his crew are the smartest, the toughest, the quickest, the bravest, and the baddest - an elite special unit given carte blanche to fight gangs, drugs, and guns. Every day and every night for the 18 years he's spent on the job, Malone has served on the front lines, witnessing the hurt, the dead, the victims, the perps.

After about ten minutes of listening I was done. I really like Don Winslow. I really don't like listening to Dion Graham--breathy, rapid fire delivery, hyper-emotion that isn't needed. Too bad. I rarely send back a book even if I don't particularly care for it. This is too much.

I didn't know how to rate the story or rate the book overall because I just couldn't listen to it.

Fire 5 is a special roving unit which comes to the aid of other fire companies that run into trouble all over the city. Its story is told by one of the men of the unit, Charly Sprockett, and from the very first scene Jack Olsen hooks the listener with his remarkable ability to write dialogue that rings true and to create characters who jump to life.

Witness first-hand the vicious brutality that a human being can inflict onto another, search for that one piece of evidence needed to solidify a conviction, and desperately try to identify a shooting victim whose mangled and burnt body is found at a scene where no clues are left behind.

This story was well written and maintained my interest. The narrator's voice was pleasant but he had a tendency to slur the pronunciation of multi-syllabic words often to the point where it took a few seconds to figure out what the word had been breaking the rhythm of the narration. Two stars for the performance was generous. I enjoyed the book's content.
