Army Special Agent John Puller is the best there is. A combat veteran, Puller is the man the U.S. Army relies on to investigate the toughest crimes facing the nation. Now he has a new case - but this time, the crime is personal: His aunt has been found dead in Paradise, Florida.

Perhaps this deserves more than two stars for the story but --well, it's just a little over the top. I think the author got a little carried away. Even so, it was fun to listen to.

Comics kill. Or so the esteemed Dr. Werner Frederick would have people believe - people like the Congressmen holding hearings on banning violent crime and horror "funny books". And when the crusade provokes a most un-funny murder, Jack Starr - comics syndicate troubleshooter - has no shortage of suspects. Was it the knife-wielding juvenile delinquent or the naked seductress? Perhaps a frustrated publisher or an outraged cartoonist. Or was it a comic book reader…?

This author/narrator combination never disappoints. Story lines are drawn from the headlines of the day. Dan John Miller is an outstanding narrator. His transition from one character or one accent to another is flawless. He brings each character into separate focus while blending them together to follow the story. It is always a pleasure to find another of these books. Always a good listen.

Longtime character actor Clive Rosengren (Cheers, Seinfeld, Ed Wood) pens a sprightly tale of Hollywood sex and homicide in Murder Unscripted. No one is going to mistake part-time actor, part-time Hollywood sleuth Eddie Collins for a movie star. While shooting a television commercial for Chubby’s Chicken, Eddie is almost relieved when he gets a call from a motion-picture bonding company on the hook for an uncompleted film whose female lead has died. That would be bad enough, but things get worse when Eddie finds out that the dead actress is his ex-wife - and her death looks like murder.

I happen to enjoy the old 1940's PI stories. This was just plain fun. Good writing, excellent -narration -- by the same person. All to often authors are not the best readers of their work. That a pleasant surprise! This is a book to return to when you just want to be entertained.

LAPD cop Scott James is not doing so well, not since a shocking nighttime assault by unidentified men killed his partner, Stephanie, nearly killed him, and left him enraged, ashamed, and ready to explode. He is unfit for duty - until he meets his new partner. Maggie is not doing so well, either. The German shepherd survived three tours in Iraq and Afghanistan sniffing explosives before she lost her handler to an IED and sniper attack, and her PTSD is as bad as Scott’s. They are each other’s last chance.

    Story

I am a dog lover who enjoys the special relationship often occurs between man and dog. This was well portrayed. Having said that, this book is an example of a man who makes poor judgement calls and pays a price which could have been avoided. There are so many books with this theme that you can begin to wonder if anyone thinks others are as smart as he is. It seems that no matter how often the character is shown to be wrong, he doesn't learn. Not really as good as most Robert Crais novels. Too bad. His books have always been entertaining and educational about human nature even if a little over the top.

When Ian and Nancy Lanigan purchased an old but well-maintained house deep in the Pennsylvania woods, they were sure they found their dream home. The sellers warned them it was haunted, but they only laughed. Later, they were to find out the entire woods were haunted. But still, the property was valuable, so valuable that developers were willing to kill to get it. The Lanigan's reeled under the assault against them. The help they needed came from an unusual and unreal source, the haunted woods.

Instead of an entertaining story well performed, this comes across as an environmental lecture being read to a class by a teacher. Good chance the class would either lose interest or fall asleep.

The narrator's harsh rapid delivery completely took away from the enjoyment of listening to what should have been very pleasant. Why oh why is there not better consideration given when choosing a narrator. The voice and delivery can make or break a book.

Praising Tim Dorsey’s tongue-in-cheek humor, the Miami Herald wrote, “Nobody, but nobody, writes like this guy.” Here Florida politics take the main stage in a rollicking satire that proves Dorsey’s at the top of his game. When a traumatic experience forever changes Florida gubernatorial race candidate Marlon Conrad’s life, he hits the road in a Winnebago to find the “real” Florida. But his odyssey is plagued with would-be assassins and cutthroat journalists.

Even today, almost five decades after John F. Kennedy was slain, the public continues to be captivated by the "Kennedy Curse" and new theories about what really happened on that fateful day in 1963. For nearly 50 years former Secret Service agent Clint Hill has lived with the unimaginable guilt of losing a president on his watch and has obeyed an honor code of silence, refusing to contribute to any books about the assassination. Until now.

If you were alive and aware when President Kennedy was assassinated, you remember what you were doing, where you were, how you felt. I was not caught up in the Kennedy mystique but the assassination of our President was shattering. This is a fine, well-written presentation of the impact on the Secret Service Detail charged with protecting President Kennedy. The anguish is palpable. Thank you for sharing a most difficult time in your lives.

At 34, Nick Walsh is a broken, deeply cynical man. Since the violent deaths of his parents 13 years earlier, he has been living alone in his childhood home in the suburban Midwest, drinking, drugging, and debauching himself into oblivion. A measure of solace is provided by his newly found relationship with Monica, a mysterious woman who seems to harbor as many secrets as he does. Obsessed with understanding the circumstances surrounding his parents' deaths and deranged by his relentless sorrow, Nick begins a campaign of spying on his neighbors via hidden cameras and microphones.

    Story

I tried. I really did. I made it all the way through the first download before I threw in the towel. This story could have been written so much better. Hours of listening to a whiney, profane, self-centered young man excuse his own abberant behavior while blaming his parents for making him that way is just too much. Granted, he endured more than most in his young life but many people have faced as much and more and have been decent, caring, productive human beings in spite of, or because of, what they went through growing up. This is a re-write of an old story line which falls way short of adequate. Considering what he had to work with, the narrator did a good job. There, I found something positive to say.
