  • Book of Days: A Novel

    • UNABRIDGED (11 hrs and 8 mins)
    • By James L. Rubart
    • Narrated By James L. Rubart
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

If Cameron Vaux can’t find it, he will lose everything. “You will lose your mind. When it starts happening.... You must find the Book of Days.” When Cameron’s dying father delivers this message, he brushes it off. Lose his memory? He’s only 25. Find a book that doesn’t even exist? Foolishness. Nothing more than the product of his father’s dementia. But now, eight years after his father’s death, it’s happening. Chunks of Cameron’s life are just — gone.

"Positive and interesting -Not too heavy handed"

This book rings with a tinge of truth without being a heavy handed mind numbing gong of a christian story. The story was engaging and uplifting and carried some interesting scenes. The fluid nature of our destiny as related to our choices was handled as a positive theme. Some aspects of the story were predictable, and a few lines of discourse a bit too contrived, but over all the story kept you moving and interested. I wool like to see the author explore his puzzles and mysteries further. Good authors do not always make good narrators, but this wasn't too bad. He performed character voices pretty well.

  • That Distant Land: 23 Short Stories

    • UNABRIDGED (18 hrs and 37 mins)
    • By Wendell Berry
    • Narrated By Michael Kramer

That Distant Land collects 23 stories, interlinked with each other and with the other published "Port William" novels. The stories, arranged in their fictional chronology (from 1888 to almost the present day), become one sustained work, a new novel that spans the entire life and time involved. The range of this book is extraordinary - it offers rest for the weary, hope for the beleaguered, and strength for everyone else.

    M says: "A National Treasure"
    "Feels real wholesome and generous"

It is saying a lot when I want to come back and read a book again. The perspective over time of one place makes you feel like you grew up there. The amazing character development in each short story speaks to me of a hero of literature. This book, with is generous helpings of humor both subtle and obvious, matched with genuine grief will leave you warm, and with a new perspective. If you like Richard Peck you may also like Wendell Berry.

    Kathleen says: "ANGELS not zombies"
    "ANGELS not zombies"

Great! Finally a recording that does not exude what I feel is mediocrity, that makes angels sound somewhat awe-inspiring rather than echoing zombies, and a recording with music other than elevator music. There are nice transitions here between narrators and some great juxtapositions between gospel music and the meaning of the verses it accompanies. The narrators provide excellent interest and emotion to the verses.
