If the author didn't get all fancy in her descriptions. There were times when she would use terms to describe things that didn't make sense. I even rewound the audio to listen again and still couldn't get what she was talking about. also the magic itself was very confusing, and half the time i didn't understand what was going on in her "action" scenes. I have listened to hundreds of audio books, and honestly it took a lot out of me to listen to the end.
I am sure all the events and their descriptions looked right in the author's head, but they forgot to explain it to the rest of us. Also there needed to be a bit of comedy in the book. none of the characters are enjoyable......at all. Then there was the whole love triangle part between the sorceress and her guard, but it fell flat and had me scratching my head, wondering why. Sure I assume the author wanted to have some sort of triangle of love later, but all of it, every last bit fell flat on it's face.
flat singular voice
It had potential if the author only stopped trying to be so damn fancy with her descriptions, and just tell the story like most the other authors out there.
I love steampunk, but this one fell so flat that i am not going to bother with the next in the series. if you want a good listen in the Steampunk world get Pip Ballantine's books instead. now that is a male female duo that makes sense and works.
Yes because if have listened to the series several times.
any one of the cats, he really makes you believe they are a different race.
not much to say but yet another great one in the series.
Yes, the story wasn't bad but I wish there was a lot less of the does he or she love me or not stuff.
Removed a lot of the teen love story aspect of the book. He could have cut out a lot of the constant blabbing by the main character about her feelings, and just hinted instead.
she does all well, and I wouldn't mind listening to her again.
The story was good, though there was a bit of young puppy love stuff within. After listening to the rest of the books I understood why the author didn't explain alot about certain parts, because there is supposed to be a mystery behind the whole thing. However, I still felt as though they could have thrown a bit more of a bone to keep me more interested. I was on the edge of not getting the second book by the time this one was over.
The general storyline is good and pretty original. I disliked the lack of reality in the space battles. (like starwars)
No first time.
There is a scene where the ship pops up in the middle of a battle.
The story was a good, though I think the author lacked the concept of physics. The story writes like a star wars or star trek movie. The space battles and flight are very one dimensional, and they don't take in account speed and time dialation. A ship flying at .8 the speed of light isn't going to see anyting out the viewport, or fire and track laser fire. If he would have made it a bit more realistic, like some of the better science fiction authors, it could have been exelent. I tended to roll my eyes in some of the space scenes and wish the author would have done his homework.
PS, the later stories in the series are better, though he still is way off reality when it comes to space and time.
The book needed a lot more descriptions and dialog.
Not from the genre, but from the writer.
He spoke stunted, and the story didn't seem to flow. His tone was completely wrong for certain situations in the story. It was like listening to a guy in his basement tell a story without any guidlines
A major disappointment. The story was lacking almost everything needed to make a story flow and enjoyable.
First of all, imagine someone sitting down and telling you about their life, and leaving out all the details which make the story interesting. There were other characters, but you never hear any dialog from them, and you never learn much about them other than they are there in the story, but that is about all. The whole book was stunted, because the lines didn't flow with one another. I would hate to see the actual pages of this book because it would only be made up of sentaces seperated into individual paragraphs. Honestly I thought I was listening to a story written by a junior high student giving an outline to a story he wished to write. Sure it was first person, but there should be some dialog between characters, not just this "this happened, and then that happened." I was thinking of that lady in in that adam sandler movie who kept saying "and then, and then,"......"NO AND THEN," I am surprised someone actually published this story as is, because it was lacking in every catigory needed to make a story. A big thumbs down and waste of a credit.
Well one thing i have found with certain female authors is that they don't truly understand how a guy thinks. While listening to the story I kept saying,"That isn't what a sixteen year old guy is thinking about." It was because of this very thing that I didn't connect with the character. No normal sixteen year old guy would have acted as they portrayed the main character. Far too much emotion, or far too much like a women would act.
Yes, but hopefully there would be a little less whining from the characters.
Kevin's performance was one of the highlights of the book. There were parts with the song and the girl singing that i wish they would have just had him read, instead of playing the song, since it was difficult to understand what she was saying in each rendition.
It was typical of these teen magical sorts of books. Lots of guys thinking nothing like a guy would really think, and too much whining about emotions and so on. It wasn't as bad as Twilight in that respect, but still not something most guys would enjoy.
the reader for sure. I have listened to a lot of books, and Emily is by far the best reader i have ever heard.
It's sassy sort of feel. again the writer brings that out in the story as well.
Emily is by far my favorite reader. I first heard her read in real men of genius, and her reading was the only thing keeping me going. this book has a better story, and so it made it that much better
this book could have been about ten times better with a little less talk about the clothing everyone was wearing and a bit more of the steampunk. it seemed as though she went into detail about the elaborate clothes in every scene. i would say about one fifth of the book talks about what people are wearing which got a bit too much later in the book. more story less clothes.
It was really hard to think of the main character as someone i cared to survive.
No, but I wish female writers would ask more men about how they write young men. Sorry but if those guys in the story were real guys, they would have nothing do to with that train wreck, especially a sixteen-seventeen year old. this was the thing that turned me off the twilight books. I almost gagged halfway through the first twilight book, but at least i made it through this one.
In the arena, when things actually happened. the rest was like reading about some teen heart throb show on the cw network.
Boredom, if you are a straight guy, don't bother.
definitely another book meant for girls. The author gets all the male characters wrong. sorry but guys don't act that way, and would never stay around a girl that is such a train wreck, jerk, and total b-tch as the main character. I was sorry to buy the whole set, and struggled to the end. I hoped for the best, and all it got was worse, and worse. the only plus about the whole story was the reader. To be honest, I thought I was listening to American Idol on steroids, only the contestants die in the end. (Then again, that might make American idol worth seeing. Ha)
If you want to listen to a book where nothing good happens, and there isn't one hero to speak of, then go right ahead and listen to this. the stories had a great feel to them and flowed well, but what is the use of listening to a series where things end up worse by the end, without any hope of them getting better? Not to spoil the ending, but come on! it just leaves you thinking, "why the hell did i listen to it in the first place?" the ending reminded me of Empire Strikes Back from star wars, and there wasn't going to be another movie after.
