One of the 20th century's most challenging novels of ideas, The Fountainhead champions the cause of individualism through the story of a gifted young architect who defies the tyranny of conventional public opinion. The struggle for personal integrity in a world that values conformity above creativity is powerfully illustrated through three characters: Howard Roarke, a genius; Gail Wynand, a newspaper mogul and self-made millionaire; and Dominique Francon, a devastating beauty.

i named my first born son Roark after the lead character in the book. i did that because of the integrity and unwillingness to compromise he exemplified. this is the only of Rand's works i agree with mostly even though the characters ways of expressing their personal lives makes me at times ill and at times amused. they are laughable in the love aspects. Rand herself must have been a very screwed up woman to try to love and i send pity to all who may have tried.
but the prophetic ways she lays out what has happened to art and culture are so 'spot on' that it makes up for the idiotic romantic aspects of this book.
it should be required reading of every elected official in every level of government. they may not understand it but they can at least be exposed to it.
