I purchased this book on a whim--don't remember exactly why. But I truly enjoyed it for many reasons.
The basic story line follows a minor-league baseball game in the Spring of 1981 that just would not end! But the story tells so much more--every person involved with this historic game was a part of this narration. It could be daunting for those who do not enjoy tons of detail, but I found so much of it very interesting. Some of the players involved in the game went on to become big names in the majors (Cal Ripkin Jr. and Wade Boggs to name just two), and it was interesting to get an insight of them at the beginning of their careers.
The book is read by the author, and he did a wonderful job. I am very glad I chose this book to listen to.
The first two chapters of this book were very hard to listen to—they describe Haatchi’s (the dog) and Little B’s (the adorable little boy) lives and circumstances before they found each other. Hang in there to reach the best part of their story—their love and devotion to each other, and the powerful effect this relationship has on, not only themselves, but those around them, including total strangers near and far.
I’m glad I found their story—it will stick with me for a very long time. Best wishes to them and their family!!
Others may enjoy this book more than I did. It is very well written--with beautiful and detailed descriptions--and narrated perfectly. However parts of the story really turned me off, especially some of the descriptions of the haute cuisine and the preparation involved.
Even though this novel was not my favorite, I would try others by the author--I love beautiful description in books--and that was this book's best feature.
I really enjoyed One Plus One--it is a well written novel with a sweet story. And I love multiple narrators when appropriate, and all four of these narrators portray the characters perfectly--it was a great book to listen to!
I loved the reality of this family--struggling in today's tough times, but hanging in there with the ever-optimistic Jess leading the way. And even Ed, who is unexpectedly thrown into Jess' family chaos, has very real-world issues he has to deal with. But you end up rooting for all of them--and it's an up and down journey the whole way.
I highly recommend One Plus One--not only is it entertaining, but it is a refreshing reminder that optimism, honesty and generosity are still the best traits for us to embrace.
I loved this story! It is well written, well narrated, and it's philosophy will stay with me--I'll just think of the landline :)
The novel is presented very well--told in the present, revealing the past through remembrances. And then the "magic phone"--the old yellow landline--throws a bit of time travel into the story. That sounds weird, but it totally works!! I began to look forward to the landline conversations almost as much as Georgie did!
I highly recommend Landline--I thoroughly enjoyed it and will definitely look for other books by this author.
Once again, I must give credit to wonderful people who write reviews--otherwise, this book never would have come across my radar!
I read a review by a listener that I follow, and saw that this book had an excellent overall rating, plus the rave review I was currently reading. I put it on my Wish List. When I got around to listening to it, I was very glad I did. Chiefs is a very interesting novel spanning over 40 years, and starts with the first Chief of Police appointed in a small Georgia town. A recurring mystery flows through the stories of three of the early chiefs--one of the ways the stories tie together.
This book was very well written, and truly held my interest throughout. The narrator was not my favorite--but that was my only very small issue with an otherwise very entertaining listen.
I adored Rob Lowe's first book, Stories I Only Tell My Friends, and it is still one of my very favorite audiobooks. I also enjoyed this second memoir, possibly a tiny bit less than the first, but still laughed along with Rob at some very human stories and experiences. As expected, the narration is wonderful once again!
In case you're looking for--or looking to avoid--the love life details, they're not here. Rob Lowe loves and embraces the life he has chosen, and I'm glad he continues to open the door and invite us to peek inside!
**If you listen to the credits, his son wrote and performed the music on this audiobook production--very cool!!**
This is another great read/listen from Mitch Albom!
The premise is certainly intriguing, but the consequences from this type of phenomenon can be unwelcome. And then the story takes a twist ...
I highly recommend all of this author's work, and look forward to more great books in the future--
What an entertaining listen--and a pleasant surprise!
I did not know what to expect when I purchased this memoir--just jumped in blindly, and had a ball!! The stories Dan related were laugh-out-loud funny, and he was the perfect narrator. Good Luck to him and his family--they have a lot of fun years ahead. And hopefully he'll share more stories with us again soon!
I enjoyed this novel--and discovered a new author!!
After I'm Gone is a very good novel about the effects and consequences of someone disappearing to avoid prosecution. It follows the lives of those he left behind--lives that are left wondering and without resolution. I thought I knew how the story would end, but I was wrong and pleasantly surprised at the end. Linda Emond did a great job with the narration as well.
I have already added two of Laura Lippman's books to my wish list, and in the meantime, I recommend After I'm Gone to all who love a good mystery!
My biggest complaint about this book? It was just not long enough!! I could have listened to this man tell his stories for many more hours. But considering his tragic health condition, it's a wonder he even wrote this memoir--and even more miraculous that he narrated the audiobook version.
But I'm truly glad he did--and grateful I listened to it. David Menasche was an inspiration to his students, and can now be an inspiration to us all!!
