Steven Pacey really makes the story and especially the characters come alive with his many voices. Joe Abercrombie is definitely a talented writer having created memorable and personally engaging people that would make me curse but also laugh out loud. I highly recommend this series. Having also just finished George R.R. Martin's master work, I was left with a fantasy-epic void, but alas, it was solidly and immensely satisfied with Abercrombie's First Law series.
Never have I hated the hero of a story so much! Burvelle was so annoyingly idiotic. I have to agree with some of the other reviews that have shared their disappointment in the main character who was so tediously arrogant and dense throughout. It was painfully aggravating to see him repeat his nonsensical mistakes without any real development in his character as a person. I found that many thoughts and ideas in the narration repeated over, and over again as if to pad the book with more words to meet a prerequisite word count like a essay assignment in college. I also found myself cheering when the hero gets unjustly punished as payback for the agony I experienced by listening on hoping it got better. I'm glad I only used my credit for this and will be saving more by not buying the rest of the series.
