I've listened to quite a few sci-fi and fantasy audiobooks, none of them from the Star Wars universe. I grew up watching and loving most of the movies (and movie offshoots) and characters. Although I am a nerdy sci-fi guy, I would not classify myself in the same 'Galaxy' as some of the more hardcore Star Wars aficionados. I normally wait to buy books with plenty of positive reviews and do not take a ton of chances on unreviewed books. With that said, I absolutely loved this book.
The author retained the imagery of the original movies as my mind's eye had seen them. I did a little research on his other audiobooks and saw a very positive trend, most of his other books are above 4 stars with plenty of reviews. He definitely has a lot of experience in the Star Wars universe as well.
The voice acting was GREAT! Especially, Han's voice (his inflection and canter was spot on). The production with the background noise was not overwhelming and definitely helped in setting the atmosphere and storytelling.
If you are new to the Star Wars audiobook universe, I would highly recommend you take a chance on these scruffy nerf herders.
Monster Hunter Alpha is quite a wild ride and menagerie of personalities. For those new to the series, this is not a bad book to read, however, I would recommend reading one of the first two novels in the Monster Hunter series prior to this one. I make this recommendation because, I began the series with this novel. I then went back and purchased the rest of the series after listening and the storyline and characters became more fleshed out in my mind's eye.
For those fans loyal to the series, this is a great deviation from the Owen Pitt first person narrative. There is quite a bit of jumping around of perspective. I listen to these books while I work, and the changing of perspectives were sometimes disorienting (to me because I'm an idiot), causing me to rewind and relisten. The story mainly focused on redemption of various characters with the underlying moral of 'Don't change who you are because... you can't change who you really are.' Great story, loved the characters AND monsters, try it out for yourself.
Monster Hunter Legion is a fun filled story, that follows the same pace and fun of the other novels in this series. If you are new to the series, the author does a reasonable job at bringing new readers up to speed, without too much rehashing that leaves other fans bored. The action and characters move at a good pace. This is not a heady, overly thought provoking sci-fi novel. It's not an idiotic slaughter fest either. It fits somewhere in between, focusing more on the relationships between various characters and the consequences of their actions or inactions.
If you enjoyed the other novels and want more of the same, this is the book for you. The book introduces some of the 'species' and monster types that have been alluded to in other books of the series as well as some new monsters. I especially love the unconventional roles the monsters play in this book. Correia likes to twist roles from antagonist to protagonist, switching your emotions from hate to love to pity throughout the story.
For those who are familiar with the series, this book's overall theme seemed to be that of forgiveness. It explored many of the relationships in the other books, and how one must forgive one's self for their own actions, forgive others for their actions against us, etc. There were some loose ends in the story I wish were tied up better or rather I hope are tied up better in the next book. I am going to mention a name, maybe the author will see this, maybe he will not...Jason Lacoco, and how he is part of the story. I hope we continue to see more of him. I tried to say that without spoiling the story. Anyways, great story, lots of fun, I highly recommend it.
Yes, the story relays emotion well. I find myself being unconsciously picky about the audio books I listen to. My attention span can be short as well, and I lose interest in stories that are too random or slow. I had no problems being attentive to this story, Very enjoyable from start to finish.
I had never listened to the other performer in this series, so I do not have the other listeners' bias. I felt John did a wonderful job.
This book is too long to listen to in one sitting. I enjoyed listening to it throughout my work week.
