  • Frank Muller: A Montage

    • ABRIDGED (15 mins)
    • Narrated By Frank Muller

Frank Muller was one of the most talented narrators to ever record a book. As Stephen King said, "[When Frank reads], the blind will see, the lame will walk, and the deaf will hear."

Jimmie says: "I owe so much to Frank Muller"
    "Nice tribute"

This is a very nice montage of audio. What better way to pay tribute a person than presenting their great work? I am actually going to start looking for books narrated by him. I've heard him in the Gunslinger series from Stephen King but will venture out a bit now.

  • Daemon

    • UNABRIDGED (15 hrs and 57 mins)
    • By Daniel Suarez
    • Narrated By Jeff Gurner
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Thousands of autonomous computer programs, or daemons, make our networked world possible, running constantly in the background of our lives, trafficking e-mail, transferring money, and monitoring power grids. For the most part, daemons are benign, but the same can't always be said for the people who design them.

Charles Atkinson says: "Really Fast Paced Sci Fi!"
"Best book I've read so far in 2010. Loved it!"

Others have said but I have to fall in line and say this book is amazingly good. The references to Dan Brown and William Gibson others have made is correct. It's a hybrid near future SF and a page-turning Thriller. I highly recommend this audiobook. It starts kind of rough in my opinion but trust me the more you read the better it gets. The bones of this story are solid. Enjoy!

  • The Road

    • UNABRIDGED (6 hrs and 39 mins)
    • By Cormac McCarthy
    • Narrated By Tom Stechschulte
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

America is a barren landscape of smoldering ashes, devoid of life except for those people still struggling to scratch out some type of existence. Amidst this destruction, a father and his young son walk, always toward the coast, but with no real understanding that circumstances will improve once they arrive. Still, they persevere, and their relationship comes to represent goodness in a world of utter devastation.

Darwin8u says: "My wife says he's that Cold Desert Writer I love."
    "Worth it"

Like the title of the book, listening to this audiobook is a journey in and of itself. The unabridged version is only 6 hours and I listened to it straight through with only a few interruptions. Hands down, this is most frighteningly realistic apocalypse story I've ever read. I found the story engrossing and the end left me teary-eyed. Great novel, especially if you are a parent.

  • Agincourt

    • UNABRIDGED (16 hrs and 13 mins)
    • By Bernard Cornwell
    • Narrated By Charles Keating
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Young Nicholas Hook is dogged by a curse, haunted by what he has failed to do and banished for what he has done. A wanted man in England, he is driven to fight as a mercenary archer in France, where he finds two things he can love: his instincts as a fighting man, and a girl in trouble. Together they survive the notorious massacre at Soissons, an event that shocks all Christendom. With no options left, Hook heads home to England, where his capture means certain death.

    Andrew says: "Fantastic!"
"I felt like I was there!"

Excellent story in a great historical setting. I loved the characters and shared the danger. This is the best audible book I've heard this year and will be looking for more of this author's works. The violence is graphic but I think it's good not to gloss over medieval combat. Otherwise, we fall into the danger of both romanticize it and losing the historical authenticity.

  • Elantris

    • UNABRIDGED (27 hrs and 31 mins)
    • By Brandon Sanderson
    • Narrated By Jack Garrett
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Legendary science fiction author Orson Scott Card calls Brandon Sanderson a writer to watch, and Publishers Weekly says his debut is "outstanding." Once the godlike rulers of the capital of Arelon, the inhabitans of Elantris have been imprisoned within themselves, unable to die after the city's magic failed years ago. But when a new prince falls victim to the curse, he refuses to accept his fate.

Lore says: "What if your body could never heal?"
    "A good first novel"

A solid fantasy story with a few small holes. Near the end the book I got worried as to how it was all going to end but the author pulled it out well. I'll be reading the Mistborn books next.

  • This Immortal

    • UNABRIDGED (6 hrs and 30 mins)
    • By Roger Zelazny
    • Narrated By Victor Bevine

Conrad Nomikos has a long, rich personal history that he'd rather not talk about. And as arts commissioner, he's been given a job he'd rather not do. Escorting an alien grandee on a guided tour of the shattered remains of Earth is not something he relishes - especially since it is apparent that this places him at the center of high-level intrigue that has some bearing on the future of Earth itself.

    phelixdakat says: "Master of Sci-Fi"
"Not my favorite Zelazny but still good"

When reading Zelazny, you have to get the context in which it was wriiten, otherwise it just seems dated. Zelazny, Harlan Ellison and others were part of the "New Wave" of SF writers that ushered in a new age of SF to counter the post world war II "golden age" SF of the 1950s. Gone were the superhuman warrior heroes of Robert Heinlein and the rest. Now we had anti-heroes with human flaws and a more introspective/cynical world views. Having said that, Zelazny was still able to strike a balance between cynicism of the new and the romanticism of the old. This book, while not my favorite of his, still shows off Zelazny's power to blend Science, History and Ancient Myth. I also like the narrator they chose for this one. Good listen!

  • Spin

    • UNABRIDGED (17 hrs and 33 mins)
    • By Robert Charles Wilson
    • Narrated By Scott Brick

One night when he was 10, Tyler stood in his backyard and watched the stars go out. They flared into brilliance, then disappeared, replaced by an empty black barrier. He and his best friends, Jason and Diane Lawton, had seen what became known as the Big Blackout. It would shape their lives.

    Robert says: "A Classic"
    "A perfect blend"

It's sometimes hard for me to find the right blend of hard sf with great characterization. Wilson seems to be very good at doing just that. Characters in this book are not just stand-ins for a science exposition. Nor is this a romance that blurs the details of the science either. It's a solid story and great SF. I'd like to see more of his novels on Audible, especially Darwinia and the Chronoliths.

  • The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 18 mins)
    • By Timothy Ferriss
    • Narrated By Ray Porter

The 4 Hour Work Week explains what a lifestyle entrepreneur is and why you should want to become one. It teaches you how to "kill" your job and design a life, the 80/20 rule and how it increases productivity, how to replace your dreams with goals, and more. Listeners can lead a rich life by working only four hours a week, freeing up the rest of their time to spend it living the lives they want.

Tim says: "Some good ideas but, not so sure. . ."
    "A refreshing surprise"

I've listened to a good number of business books but this is one of the most honest and refreshly humorous I've read in a very long time. For me it's the next step from what I learned by reading The World is Flat (Friedman) and Getting Things Done (Allen) in that it leverages the idea of globalization, automation and time management in order to get the most out of life while you can still enjoy it. I've already told all my friends about this book.

  • Elric of Melnibone

    • UNABRIDGED (5 hrs and 34 mins)
    • By Michael Moorcock
    • Narrated By Jeffery West, Michael Moorcock

It is the colour of a bleached skull, his flesh; and the long hair that flows below his shoulders is milk-white. From the tapering, beautiful head stare two slanting eyes, crimson and moody.

Tony says: "Great Listen (Ignore the Sample Listen)"
"Great Narration of a great tale"

Elric of Melnibone is not easy to classify even within Fantasy. This is high fantasy with an edge. It's a dark tale but not without humor. It has some of the standard Sword and Sorcery elements but it is much more like literature than a swashbuckling tale. Moorcock doesn't write stories , he writes fictional histories. I've read and loved his books before so I was nervous about how this audiobook would sound. The narrator did a great job of delivering the material. Michael Moorcock himself gives us a brief preface that is fun to listen to but I was grateful when the real narrator started talking. One more thing, this what they called an "audio plus" book. It has music and small sound effects in the background at some portions of the tale. I found they matched the scenes they were used in perfectly. A well polished audiobook.
