I've enjoyed listening to the other Julia Grey novels, but they often didn't complete the mystery to my satisfaction or it was too obvious who the culprit was. This one fleshes out all the characters marvelously and the mystery is much better written. I didn't know til three-quarters of the way thru, who had probably done it. I'm looking forward to the next novel in which, I hope there will be as much cooperation between Julia and Brisbane as stupid misunderstandings (which is an artless way of continuing the plot).

I love Amelia Peabody and this first book sets the scene for everything to follow. The narrator is perfect for Amelia's acerbic character.

The main characters took too long to figure out what was going on. I understand that children were "invisible" in this period of time, but still it seemed too long and drawn out as they finally tumbled to the problem. The courtroom scenes were excellent and it was very moving once the story got to go forward.

I'm enjoying the development of the relationship between the two main characters -- Lady Julia and Brisban (sp?). This novel also illustrates the lack of freedom women in this era experienced which is interesting to contemplate. The actual plot is not as good as the previous book, but still intriguing.

Don't buy this to help you sleep, there isn't a second of downtime--something exciting is always happening.
