In the spring of 1974, Calliope Stephanides, a student at a girls' school in Grosse Pointe, finds herself drawn to a chain-smoking, strawberry-blonde classmate with a gift for acting. The passion that furtively develops between them - along with Callie's failure to develop physically - leads Callie to suspect that she is not like other girls. In fact, she is not really a girl at all.

Chris says: "Great Pulitzer Winning novel!"
    "very different type novel"
    Overall

My usual reading fare are mysteries, ie., Harry Bosh, Hercule Poirot, so when I started listening to "Middlesex" I wasn't sure I'd bother even downloading the next two tapes. However, the narrator had a way of capturing my reluctant attention. The interwinding of the past and present was done with such finesse that I barely noticed the flawless seams. The charactors were actually visible in my minds eye even though I did not always care for them. Although it is still not the "type" of book I would probably ever read again, I've found this one to be of excellent quality with superb narration.

Take an exit off the Jersey Turnpike to the irresistible world of Stephanie Plum, America's favorite bounty hunter, where she gets into more trouble than ever. This time, she faces a notorious gang in Trenton who wants her dead. Morelli warns that she's in too deep, and Stephanie more than agrees.

John says: "A Fun Story with distinct characters"
    "time to quit"

I have "read" all ten of the Stephanie Plum stories and think this one will be my last. The first three are sensational, I laughed out loud! The next few were fair but lacked that "j'ne sai qua". (The intangile something, but still ok.) Numbers 8 and 9 were out and out lousey and 10, well lets just say its FLAT. Where is the comedy! This was the main aspect of the stories. The last time Grandma Mazur was side splitting funny was in number two. Maybe the stories aren't as bad as the reader. I don't know, I just know I don't want anymore.

"The dead don't talk. I don't know why." But they do try to communicate, with a short-order cook in a small desert town serving as their reluctant confidant. Odd Thomas thinks of himself as an ordinary guy, if possessed of a certain measure of talent at the Pico Mundo Grill and rapturously in love with the most beautiful girl in the world, Stormy Llewellyn.

    Denise says: "No Doubting Thomas"
    "Very Very Good!"
    Overall

I am not necessarily a Dean Koontz fan, he's just too verbose. However, the reader in this particular case was so tremendously great he overrode some of the objectionable redundancy. In some cases this is a love story, warm and tender. The main charactor is gentle and easy to understand and of course the plot is pure Koontz, bizzare. Somehow it all fits together, works, and even the ending is pretty darn ok.

This was my third Simon Brett, Mrs. Pargeter book. I like them very much. The narration is superb, the main charactors very colorful, the plot is done well and suspenseful, and I do not have to deal with profanity, violence or sexual connotations. What a relief!!!
I get my share of that with John Grisham. This book was simple enjoyable entertainment!

I had never "read" any of these books but was delighted to find the stories pleasant, well read with good charactorization, and just plain enjoyable listening. No pulitzer prize winner but no foul language, no blood and gore, sort of like Miss Marple and "murder she wrote". Highly reccommend for light 'listening'.

He's Hollywood's most dazzling star, who is worshiped by millions and hated by one twisted soul. His existence is under siege as a series of terrifying, enigmatic "messages" breaches the security systems of his Bel Air estate. The boxes arrive mysteriously, one by one, at Channing Manheim's compound. Manheim's security chief, ex-cop Ethan Truman, is used to looking beneath the surface of things. But until he entered the orbit of a Hollywood icon, he had no idea just how slippery reality could be.

First I must say the Narrator of this book was excellent, unfortunately the book was not. I realie that Koontz is like King, wordy, and his descriptive powers are excellent, however......
I struggled over the ramblings and back and forth confusion of the first 4 hours and then became maddened by the gross charactors and finally, upon the beginning of the second part, after already suffering 9 hours of book, I QUIT! I Deleted! I suggest you avoid all the hassle and just go on to another book.

A movie director is charged with murdering an actress during sex, and then staging her death to make it look like a suicide. In a seemingly unrelated case, a loner is murdered, leaving the sheriff's department with no clues. One unsettling revelation after another leaves a retired FBI agent and an L.A. detective thinking they've unmasked a most frightening killer with almost inconceivable calculation.

Aaron says: "Terrific Pairing of Connelly's best Detectives."
    "A Darkness More Than Night"
    Overall

As an avid "Bosh" fan, I found this novel unique as it put the usual hero in a different light. A few wild and tricky twists keep your attention and the narration is excellent. You can "see" Bosh on the stand, you can "see" McCaleb on his boat. And all TOO vividly can you "see" the murderer in the act. Quite good.
