Drawn to an old trunk in the attic, Lara Calhoun is unable to resist finding out what treasure her late, beloved mother had kept hidden away for all these years. Her unexpected discovery soon turns her world upside down and makes her second-guess everything she's ever believed about her mother and about love. Will it lead her straight into Dave Lafferty's arms, or make her turn away from the love of a lifetime?

I chose this selection because I generally like the short story form and it was free. I wasn't expecting a formula romance, and I'm not a big fan of romance stories. If I had been buying it, I might have noticed that it was published by Harlequin and known it wasn't my type of story.
The performance was fine and the story had a reasonable set up but patent and predictable. I thought it lacked depth and the little bit of intrigue didn't really go far enough.

Why we think it’s a great listen: The most celebrated performance in all of Audible’s history, The Help has nearly 2,000 5-star reviews from your fellow listeners. We hear the print book’s not bad, either. In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women - mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends - view one another.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Help to be better than the print version?

Not having read the book, I can't compare audio to print but I really enjoyed the audio. The reader's voices brought so much depth of character. It was engrossing. And - I haven't seen the movie.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Abilene was my favorite. I suppose because she was the main thread of the story but I loved her outlook on life and how she faced everything with thoughtfulness and courage.

Have you listened to any of the narrators’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This was the first time I had listened to these narrators

    Any additional comments?

It was serendipitous that my daughter and I listened to this while driving from Colorado to Georgia. It wasn't intentional to connect the South and the book but it was a little funny to be listening to all those Southern voices in the book and then begin to hear them all around us. I felt like I was stepping into the book; not by actions or behavior of anyone, but by the melodic voices around us.
