On his way to work one morning, Bill Chalmers suddenly discovers that he cannot remember where he is going, what he is meant to be doing or, indeed, who he is. He remembers only one thing, "The Maximum Information in the Minimum Time", his company's motto. But when his memory returns, it is accompanied by a numbness that gradually affects his entire body.

I am almost done with the 1st part of this book and wondering if I should go on. As one of the reviewers said, get an abridged edition. Then you won't have to listen to every email address and also have to listen to the Plato lesson his son bought on line. To me, these were just page fillers for the author to write a bigger book. I hope this gets better but I sitll have an hour before I get to Part 2. I may not make it.

The Ruins follows two American couples enjoying a pleasant, lazy beach holiday together in Mexico. On an impulse, they go off with newfound friends in search of one of their group, the young German who, in pursuit of a girl, has headed for the remote Mayan ruins, site of a fabled archeological dig.

I don't know what the other reviewers usually read, but I read a lot of Stephen King and Dean Koontz and I loved this book. I hope they make it into a horror movie. I usually just listen in my car but found myself taking my headphones & MP3 player into work, on breaks, lunch, bathroom breaks. I couldn't "put it down". I started looking for other books by the author. Maybe the title was a bit misleading for people looking for a book about ruins, but I was pleasantly surprised by it. I say if you like horror, read this book, now. And I hope he writes more like this one.
