Why we think it’s a great listen: Some books are meant to be read; others are meant to be heard – Water for Elephants falls into the second group, and is one of the best examples we have of how a powerful performance enhances a great story. Nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski reflects back on his wild and wondrous days with a circus. It's the Depression Era and Jacob, finding himself parentless and penniless, joins the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth.

I thought this was a really interesting book the way it went back in time but kept coming back to the reality of old age and all the condescending ill-treatment and disrespect that goes with it. I was enthralled and had to keep listening until the end. A great writer and I definitely recommend this book.

This extraordinary, magical novel is the story of Clare, a beautiful art student, and Henry, a librarian, who have known each other since Clare was six and Henry was 36, and were married when Clare was 22 and Henry 30. Impossible but true, because Henry has Chrono-Displacement Disorder: periodically his genetic clock resets and he finds himself misplaced in time, pulled to moments of emotional gravity in his past, present, and future.

I struggled on with this book to the bitter end and couldn't find anything positive to say about it at all! My fellow book club members raved about it and I felt I was reading a different book - perhaps I was! It was long winded, no gripping content and often difficult to follow as people kept changing year and age and combination of ages. Not for me, and I wouldn't pick up this auther again!
