I am trying to find words to describe how bad this book was. I am at a loss. The book started off nicely, but once Mr. Theroux left Europe, it became a trudging misery. All it was a long drawn out pompous pondefication about child prostitution, bashing of christian missionaries, bashing of President Bush, bashing of other authors. It was murderous to get through this book.
For all his pompous "horror" of child prostitution, he certainly was able to find it, over and over and over.
The last part is only 7 hours long but it took literally 3 months to get through. Honestly, if I could have gnawed off my own ears, I would have. If this book was any more boring it would be required reading in 8th grade!
No, not the genre. But you would never get me to read Paul Theroux again. Not for $1,000,000.00, not if you had a gun to my head, not if you were waterboarding me with lava!
No, the narration dragged on right along with the story.
Stay away... stay far far away!
The whole premise behind the story was scary. I was really captured at the beginning. It was a great story, right up until the hitchhiker in the truck. It would have been a lot better if the author didn't have to keep falling back on meaningless sex to fill in pages.
It depends on the book. He is not a Stefan Rudnicki who I will listen to a book simply because he is narrating it. But I wouldn't reject a book simply because of him.
I don't think it needs a follow up. This story has completely played out. All that is left is to escalate the numbers and the nastiness.
I was really excited when this book started, I was hoping for a good Halloween read.
But as it kept going, I was less and less impressed and I had pretty much guessed the ending.
This story never lets you sit down and relax!
You start to think that you know how everything would go and BAM something really changes.
Great performance! Really drew me in.
Are you kidding? They are bloody vampires!
I read the first 2 books of the Game of Throne series. Loved the first, the second turned into nothing but sex. I felt embarrassed for the guy reading it.
So I was hesitant with this book. But it turned out to be AWESOME.
The book started off really good and I really enjoyed it. But the ending just, well it just ended. There was all this build up and then a standard ending. It was kind of like going through a haunted house room by room and in the end, being confronted by a helium balloon in a white sheet.
I enjoyed the whole performance. It was well read and kept you very engrossed in the book.
The first book I read of Card was Lost Gate. I loved it. I was going to try the second book but it got some really poor reviews. I looked at this one because it had lots of great reviews for it so I gave it a try, I was surprised how different the story writing was.
The author is crude and demeaning of women.
The author does not generate any emotional connection with the characters.
I was hoping for an adventure of Alaska bush-pilots. But got a story of crude language and shallow characters. This is one of the few books where I wasn't rooting for any of the characters. The story was pretty predictable so there was no "edge of the seat" moments and at times it got preachy about the environment, but not in a inspirational way.
So unreal you can actually believe it!
There is no favorite character. They are all so tied into the story. You are rooting for the good guys. You are scared of the bad guys and you only hope the good guys win in the end. But you never know for sure.
Holy Crap... You had better get out of LA!
McCammon is a hit-or-miss author for me. The first book I read was Swan Song and I loved it! The second was Wolf's Hour, and it just wasn't all that great. This book, oh my gosh, I found myself sitting in my car, in the drive way, in the dark not wanting to stop listening!Super Great Book!!!
I must be getting old, but at one point I just couldn't listen any more. I have kids and the horror that the author was able to inflict even on fictional children I just could not stomach. I couldn't finish the book.
No. Unlike other collections of interesting coincidences, this book is over opinionated and slanted to the author's personal views.
It was less then 2 hours, and it became background noise after 30 mins.
Oh Good Lord I hope not.
Got it because it was free.
Wrote a review because it was so unimpressive.
The story isn't a story of a happy marriage. It was a selfish non-committal relationship. The whole book is about how they weren't married. This book is a farce.
Pretty much as mono-toned as you can get.
It did make me realize that my real marriage is actually not that bad. At least we are committed to it.
This book tries to glorify everything that isn't marriage and tries to make it sound like a successful marriage. There is actually nothing in this book that talks about their marriage. It is a story of ostrich-head-in-the-sand denial of the real situation. This woman has never had to grow up.
