When a British princess falls in love with a Roman officer destined for imperial greatness, their forbidden desire exacts an unexpected price: banishment from Avalon. Journeying outside the enchanted isle, Helena grows from maiden to mother to wisewoman, experiencing both joy---with the birth of her child---and loss, when politics forces her lover to choose between the Empire and her.

What didn’t you like about Rosalyn Landor’s performance?

The attempt at portraying male and child voices was grating to listen to. Couldn't finish listening. The sample listen is the introduction. Not characters.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Some books are meant to be read; others are meant to be heard – Water for Elephants falls into the second group, and is one of the best examples we have of how a powerful performance enhances a great story. Nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski reflects back on his wild and wondrous days with a circus. It's the Depression Era and Jacob, finding himself parentless and penniless, joins the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth.

Title says it all. Got about a third of the way through it and gave it up. I don't often do that, even if it is bad I want to make it to the end, but as I knew how it ended... well, didn't feel bad starting something else.

  • When You Are Engulfed in Flames

Once again, David Sedaris brings together a collection of essays so uproariously funny and profoundly moving that his legions of fans will fall for him all over again. He tests the limits of love when Hugh lances a boil from his backside, and pushes the boundaries of laziness when, finding the water shut off in his house in Normandy, he looks to the water in a vase of fresh cut flowers to fill the coffee machine.

Rarely do I actually laugh out loud while reading or listening to a book. This guy made me laugh. He is brilliant.
