"Not what I expected"
This is a narrated documentary, not an historic story. I'm sure it's filled with great information for WWII buffs, but I was expecting a different delivery style.
"Great story but the narrator ruined it form ME"
I really liked the detail of the story and particularly appreciate the enormous extra effort that developing so many subplots (with all of their capricious reversals) requires. The realistic unpredictability of each story thread is refreshing. Unfortunately I will have to wait until I retire and have 180+ hours of leisure to read the printed version of the rest of the series.
Although I see that I am vastly outvoted on the quality of the narrator’s performance, I could barely stand the 33+ hours it took to get through this first volume. Can’t do it; especially for 2 credits/book. Sorry, Roy...the performance did not resonate well with me, personally, although I see that almost 95% of the other listeners disagree :o)
"Interesting Perspective and Lots of History"
I really enjoy a nice historical fiction that entices me to start “google-ing” for more information. This author did a great job of presenting the dry historical facts in an entertaining and intriguing manner which made the motivations, from Henry VIII’s perspective, seem plausible; particularly since she did not attempt to absolve him of all guilt.
The narrator was pretty good as a “strait narrator.” He was not what I would call a “voice actor,” though. To be fair, however, this book did not lend itself to a multi-rolled vocal performance.
"Hold on a minute...This is a TAWDRY ROMANCE NOVEL!"
Shame on me for not paying closer attention to the other reviews written. I picked this book up based on the publisher's summary and the overall rating...I should have read down past the first two written reviews and I would have seen that this is a romance novel with a TINY trace of science fiction, which enabled it to sneak its way into my Sci-Fi & Fantasy search results.
Lessons learned...from now on I will be sure to research the other books a new-to-me author writes. I'll pay attention to the number of books found in the search results and compare that to the number of books that pertain to the category I'm interested in versus the number that pertain to the category(ies) I am NOT interested in. :-p Buyer beware!
"5 out of 21 may be useful for you..."
This author presents several suggestions that worked for him in his career, but I found that most of them would not work for me. Several were a little contradictory and not prioritized. The bottom line is that (no surprise) these techniques are not universally algorithmic so, as with any advice, every reader will have to use common sense to decide which method to apply to each situation they find themselves in.
"I'm a new Harris fan!"
I was wonderfully creeped out by the movie almost twenty years ago and thought I would see how I liked the book. I could not stop listening. The narrator's performance mesmerized me. The narration, combined with the little I remembered from the movie, completely absorbed me in the story. I plan to listen to the rest of Thomas Harris' stories; especially if they are narrated by Frank Muller!
"Great book. Not much like the movie"
The screen play was very different from the book. The overall premise (the main character on a trivia game show, then arrested and accused of cheating) was the same, but even the character’s names are different in the book. I really enjoyed this story. I plan to check out more from Vikas Swarup.
The narrator is FANTASTIC. I would actually buy a book by an author I knew nothing about, simply because it was narrated by Christopher Simpson, so the vocal performance would be excellent.
"Listened for about half an hour..."
I probably would have enjoyed this book with a different narrator. After reading the other customer reviews, I was looking forward to an excellent story, but could not get past the droning, over-affected, yet monotonic cadence of the authors reading style.
"Good story, bad narrator"
After listening to the first two books, the new narrator's style for this last volume was distractingly harsh and dissonant. I had a very hard time becoming engaged in the story or caring about the hero's success.
