I most enjoyed that the world Peter Clines has created seems like a real world with superheroes instead of a comic book world. The dangers of the main characters are exciting and it keeps you on the edge of your headphones to see how it all plays out.
Peter Clines does an excellent job with his transitions between the current timeline and the flashbacks to not only accentuate the drama but it helps with revealing surprises in a very timely manner.
The Mighty Dragon, Stealth, and Sergeant Freedom were my favorite characters.
The end of the world was just the beginning.
A very thoughtful, intelligent survival story that made me laugh and pull my hair out un frustration. I loved this story and the narrator is wonderful. If you're looking for quality sci-fi survival story this is worth your time.
This book is a fun ride through 50's style sci-fi that made me laugh and enthusiastic to listen to more. The narrator does a masterful job giving each character a distinct voice and there could be no other voice for the Emperor himself. Looking for fun, inventive sf that will make you laugh? Look no further. This is the read for you. Take a chance and you will not regret it.
My childhood and all the things I loved given to me in one great adventurous Easter egg hunt in a cyber universe I can't wait to play in.
None compare...but in the Virtual Reality genre I would say Snow Crash. The distopian future and clever adventure hooks, the well thought out and loveable characters, and the sheer badasserie of the Metaverse would somewhat compare to Ready Player One. As far as story though the books are not that similar.
Wil Wheaton brings Wade's sarcasm and characteristics to life so well that I don't think I would have done him justice in my head.
How far would you go to find an egg worth 250 Billion dollars?
If you were born between 1970 and 1978, and consider yourself a geek this is the book you MUST read. If you think you know a lot about the 80's then you haven't met Wade Wilson yet. I cannot describe the absolute joy I had in listening to this book. I've listened to it 3 times since I downloaded it because it is so much fun to be there with Wade and his friends in their quest for the largest treasure hoard in history. From the old Dungeons and Dragons games, to the first home video game console you owned (Pong and Atari 2600 for me), to all the songs and movies you loved from the 80's (and a lot you were unaware of), to a glimpse of the future of global communications and interactivity that I can't wait to play, Ready Player One is, by far, the coolest book to come around in the past 10 years!
It is definitely among the top 10 of the top 100 books I've listened to.
I loved the evil of Dr. Impossible and the voice acting of Paul Boehmer in that part. He really brought the character to life.
Absolutely...I didn't want to turn it off but there was homework to be done.
I'm an old Wild Cards fan. I own all of the books to the series and have loved reading them for years. When I found out that there was an audiobook of book 1 I had to have it and I was not disappointed. Luke Daniels is a great reader of the stories and his voice acting was great. I really enjoyed the new story of Ghost's origin with the Sleeper (Roger Zelazny's immortal character).
My favorite part was Luke's reading of
My favorite scene is where the Radical (Mark Meadows) and the Lizard King (Thomas Marion Douglas / this world version of Jim Morrison of the Doors) team up to fight Hardhat during the 60 counterculture movement.
No. Not because it wasn't good but because it's one of my favorite books and I like to savor it like a fine wine.
If you know of or have been introduced to the Wild Cards shared universe this is a great production of book 1. If you know nothing about it I highly recommend it. It is kind of a Super Hero / Villain in an alternate reality of our world which diverged shortly after WWII into a realistic vision of our world with super powers.
It rates among my top 20 but I've listened to a lot of audiobooks by the greats.
I liked how the author combined the two genres without the story feeling forced. It felt like both a comic book and a horror movie. The literary device of breaking the story into current and past time lines works well and helps to develop the heroes. Like any good comic book you need an origin story and this audiobook does a great job of including the heroes origins alongside a compelling story.
No but I really enjoyed having two voice actors for the reading. It worked to set the female characters apart from the male characters and make each one their own.
For these superheroes the end of the world was just the beginning of their story.
If you like comic books and enjoy a good zombie apocalypse yarn then you will really enjoy this audiobook.
Already have and will continue to recommend it to friends.
Cal, the main character, is my favorite. He is witty and a true hero amongst posers.
Quality voice acting from both and great use of vocal distortion on some of the characters. Kafer is great in portraying MechaniCal's disdain and frustration over the heroes actions.
Sometimes it takes a villain to save the world.
Any comic book fan will have a blast listening to this story and treasure it as if it were their favorite comic, I did.
