Oh yeah! I found myself looking for reasons to get in the car and listen to this book! Thank goodness I have an ipod, or I wouldn't have done anything around the house until this book was finished! Similiar to Rutherford's "The Forrest" (which I hardily reccommend), The Princes of Ireland follows several families through history and looks at how their lives have intertwined. You'll cheer for true love, gasp at human sacrifice and see how like in modern days, a simple word or action can be misjudged. If nothing else, you will come away with a better understanding of the complexities of Ireland, both historical and modern. It is one thoughly enjoyable read!
I enjoyed this book. I had previously gifted it to my brother for his birthday because he has an interest in Starbucks. He started talking about the book, and I found myself more and more interested. The author is somewhat self-important in this book, but I found myself enjoying his positive can-do attitude. Here is a man who was once a top ad executive for a huge advertising firm and he was taking pleasure in a toilet well cleaned by his own hands! One of the main premise of this book is you need to enjoy the simpler pleasures of a job well done. He also preaches a respect and dignity for all mankind. I would recommend this book for easy pleasurable reading.
...but so far so good. I have been changing my eating and exercise behavior for 8 weeks and this has been on of my tools. It seems to work well, I play in the background when I am working on paperwork and I don't seem to get the "munchies".
This book grabbed me, waltzed me around the floor and then deposited me dizzy and hungry in a chair next to banquet! You have a great reader who takes you along on a ride that answers the question, "What would it be like to be the NYTimes Restaurant Reviewer?" The getups that Ruth devised to go unnoticed or at least unrecognized had me howling and I found that I had visualized the friends that she brought along to complete her story. I loved when her son learned to make hash browns or cakes, I hated the previous critic for his actions and I rode shotgun when she went on a food tour of New York. I could even understand as she starts to question her place on the (forgive me) food chain. I have enjoyed Ruth's other books, but this one really lightened up my life a little and I think that I started to eat a little better too, because who can have a bag of micro popcorn after hearing her description of a dinner at a four-star restaurant!
I have found this book to be an interesting read but notice that when I tell my friends about it, their eyes tend to glaze over and pretty soon they're mumbling, "uh huh, well, that certainly sounds interesting!" So, ok, this is not everyone's cup of tea. I think that the ideal reader is the person who reads that a batch of cookie doough will make 99 1" cookies and then tries to picture how many 10" cookies that would be. One of the most interesting aspects is trying to put the author's suppositions into what you remember of your graduate level Research Methods Class that you aced 20 years ago. One more caveat, it does pull the curtain away and expose cheating sumo wrestlers, cheating teachers, real estate agents, and crack drug dealers!
Just a warning here, Ender's Saga books are like potato chips, it's very difficult to eat only one!!! ...and then you'll find yourself walking around saying phrases like "Han Vaetsa"! I bought this book for a long drive to L.A. around Christmastime and found Ender's Game to be fascinating. As soon as I finished, I found myself listening to the next book and then another. After that I was ready for an Ender vacation. But I do have the next two books on my wishlist and I won't be suprised if I am listening to them on a long drive (or train ride) this summer!
I thought that this would be an interesting way to use affirmations, but what I have found is a powerful tool that is helping to change me to be a more positive person. Since I have started to listen to this, I have found that I am more open to new thoughts and more positive with my relationships. This is such a positive, self-affirming set of thoughts!
