  • Death by Black Hole: And Other Cosmic Quandaries

    • UNABRIDGED (12 hrs and 8 mins)

Neil deGrasse Tyson has a talent for guiding readers through the mysteries of outer space with stunning clarity and almost childlike enthusiasm. This collection of his essays from Natural History magazine explores a myriad of cosmic topics. Tyson introduces us to the physics of black holes by explaining what would happen to our bodies if we fell into one; he also examines the needless friction between science and religion, and notes Earth's status as "an insignificantly small speck in the cosmos".

Lind says: "Well written and well read"
    "easy to understand"
    Overall

Easy to understand for an astrophysics book! Neil does a great job of writing for the average person (I have a bachelor's in Chemistry, but I knew very little astrophysics). I never felt talked down to. It was a lot of fun to read! I especially enjoyed his description of a death by black hole as spaghettification. If you want to learn more about astrophysics, this is a great way to start!

Bean, once the smallest student at the Battle School, and Ender Wiggin's right hand, has grown to be a power on Earth. He served the Hegemon as strategist and general in the terrible wars that followed Ender's defeat of the alien empire attacking Earth. Now he wishes for a safe place to build a family, something he has never known, but there is nowhere on Earth that does not harbor his enemies; old enemies from the days in Ender's Jeesh, new enemies from the wars on Earth.

    "good conclusion"

I thought this book was a good conclusion to the series. Very bitter sweat! Watching the characters grow up and seeing Peter become the real Hegemon (that we always knew he would be) was the best part.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Gaiman’s not just an award-winning author, but a narrator who earns rave reviews – and fields requests from other authors to perform their books, too! Nobody Owens, known to his friends as Bod, is a normal boy. He would be completely normal if he didn't live in a sprawling graveyard, being raised and educated by ghosts, with a solitary guardian who belongs to neither the world of the living nor of the dead....

    "excellent!!"
    Overall

This is an excellent book. Its a very exciting book for kids! Its filled with adventure, lessons about obeying parents, growing up. But as an adult I was able to thoroughly enjoy reading this book. I highly recommend this book for kids and adults.

Fifteen-year-old Christopher Boone has Asperger's Syndrome, a condition similar to autism. He doesn't like to be touched or meet new people, he cannot make small talk, and he hates the colors brown and yellow. He is a math whiz with a very logical brain who loves solving puzzles that have definite answers.

Robert says: "Endearing. Pathos, humor, reality, and insight."
    "unique perspective"
    Overall

The perspective of this book is fascinating. Its told from the point of view of an autistic teenage boy. The author does a great job of this. What I didn't like about this book is that its supposed to be a kids book. The author uses the "F" word more times than the average adult book. This really takes away from the book. Also the child's mom is a very difficult character to like. Its like she doesn't even try to work with her son. I know its difficult, but she didn't even try. So for me that character also took away from the book.

Why we think it’s a great listen: How do you one-up a book that’s already a global literary phenomenon? Hire Simon Vance to (flawlessly) interpret the loves, lives, and murders of Sweden’s cold and secret-filled world. A spellbinding amalgam of murder mystery, family saga, love story, and financial intrigue. It's about the disappearance 40 years ago of Harriet Vanger, a young scion of one of the wealthiest families in Sweden.

Pamela Murphy says: "COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN"
    "caution but interesting"
    Overall

The story was well written and kept me interested. The characters are well developed and unique. For the most part I liked this book. The reason that I only give it 3 stars is the graphic rape scenes in the middle of the book. The scenes come out of nowhere, and are definately unneeded!

Clare and Henry have known each other since Clare was six and Henry was thirty-six. They were married when Clare was twenty-three and Henry was thirty-one. Impossible but true, because Henry is one of the first people diagnosed with Chrono-Displacement Disorder: periodically his genetic clock resets and he finds himself misplaced in time, pulled to moments of emotional gravity from his life, past and future.

Herve Bronnimann says: "My Favorite Audiobook so far"
    "Unique and"
    Overall

I definately enjoyed this book. I thought the story was very unique. I loved the way the author moves us though time in the same out of order way as the main character without making the story confusing. She makes the characters come alive which makes the ending all the more powerful. One warning, there is quite a bit of cursing so sensitive ears beware.

Seven-year-old Henry Day is kidnapped and renamed "Aniday" by changelings, ageless beings who inhabit the woods near his home. The changelings also leave behind one of their own, who flawlessly impersonates Henry except for one noteworthy detail: the new Henry is a prodigiously talented pianist.

    Overall

I absolutely loved this book! I plan on listening/reading this book again. The characters are unforgettable, and the narrators do an excellent job. The author has the ability to make even the fantasy world of the "changlings" believable. I can't wait to see what he writes next!
