I find myself thinking about the Bel Canto characters as I fall asleep and when I wake up....and then I have to remind myself that they are not real people. I prefer non fiction to fiction, but this novel grabbed me in a way that was utterly unexpected and moving.
After listening to (and loving) Truth and Beauty, I decided to give Ms. Patchett's fiction a try. What can I say? Her writing feels like a personal gift to be treasured forever.
The novel was tedious. Henry's narrator has a totally annoying glib voice that seemed inappropriate for his character. If I met someone in real life who had a voice like his, I'd want to smack him! The plot is repetitive, innumerable trips back and forth in time, many of which did not add anything to the storyline. And the incessant demonstrations of undying devotion between Henry and Claire would be overkill even on a soap opera. Enough already!!! The last 45 minutes are a tearjerker, but it was small payoff for sloshing through the first eleven hours. I stuck to it because I was heavily influenced by all the glowing reviews online. To each his own.
I loved Angela's Ashes. But Tis comes up short. McCourt's narrative wanders and goes around in circles. The author comes off as a bit whiny, envious, and slightly maladjusted. He desribes his courting of his wife and subsequent divorce, but there isn't very much information provided as to why the marriage disintegrated. One gets the feeling that the author was to blame.
I loved this book...the author's narration is wonderful. Her work is unbiased and compassionate. A truly eye opening look into the thoughts of typical Iraqis citizens.
I was looking forward to listening to B of Bones on my vacation. I lasted through 9 hours and then threw in the towel.
And I really resent the time I devoted to the book...hoping and hoping that the storyline and character development would pick up. Bag of Bones is repetitive, boring, and uninvolving. I don't recall when I have cared so little for the main character in a novel. The insertion of supernatural events was completely unsuspenseful. I wish I hadn't wasted my book credit on this one. Ugh.
