America’s self-invented tinkerers are back at it in their metaphorical garages - fiddling with everything from solar-powered cars to space elevators. In Bunch of Amateurs, Jack Hitt visits a number of different garages and has written a fascinating book that looks at America’s current batch of amateurs and their pursuits. Beginning with Ben Franklin’s kite and leading all the way to the current TV hit American Idol, Hitt argues that the nation’s love of self-invented obsessives has always driven the country to rediscover the true heart of the American dream.

What would have made Bunch of Amateurs better?

Researched facts, avoided unsubstiated generalizations. From opening premse, manufactured a thesis and forced data into it. Can't comment on the conclusion as I was so fed up with the con job in the first several chapters I quit.

What could Jack Hitt have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Went to a movie instead of writing this book...or better yet, offer me my money back.

    Any additional comments?

Can I have my money back? I'd get more by buying a lottery ticket.

The beloved humorist and bestselling author returns with his most riotous collection of essays to date. Starting with his trademark outdoorsman's wit, Patrick F. McManus's newest collection ponders the strange allure of the RV, the existential implications of being lost, the baffling tendency of animals to outsmart those who wish to hunt them, and the singular pleasure of doubling the size of every fish one doesn't actually catch.

What did you love best about The Bear in the Attic?

    Wonderful set of tall tales.

What about Norman Dietz’s performance did you like?

    Right accent, tone and timing.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Very troublesome reaction. While walking and listening I would burst out in guffaws..earning strange stares from those nearby.

Told from the point of view of the men who waged this steel-shattering battle, The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors captures Navy pilots attacking enemy battleships with makeshift weapons and sacrificial valor, a veteran commander improvising tactics never taught in Annapolis, and young crews from across America rising to an impossible challenge.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Detailed narrative of a little known but critical naval battle of WWII.

What did you like best about this story?

Clearly written with descriptions of the men involved so that you knew and cared for what would and did happen to them. At the same time detailing the combat so forcefully, the sight and sound of combat was almost real.

Have you listened to any of Barrett Whitener’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

He gave character and voice to the sailors.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The misery and terror of the survivors in the sea.

    Any additional comments?

One of the best narrative histories of combat and the fighting men I have read

Spur Award-winner Craig Johnson has garnered critical acclaim for his Walt Longmire mysteries. In this riveting seventh entry, Wyoming’s Absaroka County sheriff, Walt Longmire, is pushed beyond his limits. When three hardened convicts escape FBI custody in a mountain blizzard, an armed psychopath leads them up Big Horn Mountain. As Longmire struggles to track their treacherous ascent, he’ll need all the help he can get from the tribal spirits of the towering summit.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Great disappointment. Should have skipped this one.

If you’ve listened to books by Craig Johnson before, how does this one compare?

To little of the marvelous associated characters with their indiocyncraces. Forced story. Could have ended with a long shot, artifically prolonged to create a lot of fantasy.

Was Hell Is Empty worth the listening time?

    No

    Any additional comments?

I have enjoyed the other books by this author, but he has established a predictable pattern of investigate, hunt and suffer terrible weather and outdoor conditions aided by unearthly forces. I like his characters but having read (heard) several of his stories, plan to lay of his books for a while.
