"good find"
I really liked "Old man's War". This book has everything I wanted. Sci-fi, aliens, fighting, humor. I enjoy the type of book where you have a person who starts a new situation, learns about the univers and becomes a hero. Ussually it is from the perspective of a young person coming of age, going through bootcamp or some like training. The unique thing about this, is that it is from an old man's perspective.
The writing is well done, the book goes quick. The alien races are an interesting mix. Good book.
"the wheel of time spins in a rut at Crossroads"
yes, if you have read the other books first
at 2x speed
I am going through this series on audible to prepare for the final book (yes, 10 credits into the series so far). I have read the books before, but wanted to listen to refresh my memory. This book is the least interesting of the first 10. However, if you have read the series from the begining, you should read this. I think of it as information that is like an appendix or supplimental reading at the end of a book (like with lord of the rings). Not much exciting, but if you like the world and characters you would want to read it. sort of the low point of the series as far as plot. What i have been doing is listening to it at 2x speed. Slowing down at a couple of spots. It will get better next book.
"buy it"
Great Sci-Fi epic about what if aliens came to earth and what they would do. The action is good, the characters are interesting. The plot is entertaining and engrossing. The main character is believable as a very resourceful “normal” American. The portrayal of governments and bureaucracies not able to deal effectively with the Aliens is spot on.
"no good"
I read the reviews of this book, and that is why I decided to get it. I did not have a problem with the narrator as some did; however, not even the best reading would make this a good book. This is an epic fantasy story. This is not along the lines of epic stories that I enjoy. It was no good. What I mean by that , is there was no good versus evil. The author spent a great deal of time creating a world and characters, but if there was any character who seemed “good”, the author seemed to take great pleasure in killing or corrupting them. This may be appealing to some listeners, but not me. The story confusing at times, I found myself wondering why so much time was put into development of certain plot lines, only to have them cut off so suddenly at points. There were no great battles. Yes there were battles, but they were all won by some trick or another. The author spent a great deal of time setting up for the battles, but he always created ‘paper’ armies that would easily crumple with some ploy. I found myself hoping for a reasonable conclusion, some point to the conflict, or some good to present itself, but soon I just found myself longing for the end of the story. I gave it 2 stars as it was not awful, it just was not the type of story I like. It does seem that some reviewers found if very good. It is not a good versus evil, it is just no good.
