LAPD cop Scott James is not doing so well, not since a shocking nighttime assault by unidentified men killed his partner, Stephanie, nearly killed him, and left him enraged, ashamed, and ready to explode. He is unfit for duty - until he meets his new partner. Maggie is not doing so well, either. The German shepherd survived three tours in Iraq and Afghanistan sniffing explosives before she lost her handler to an IED and sniper attack, and her PTSD is as bad as Scott’s. They are each other’s last chance.

Captain Hayward leads the official homocide investigation, while Pendergast, D'Agosta, and Nora undertake a private quest for the truth. Their serpentine journey takes them into a part of Manhattan they never imagined could exist: a secretive and deadly hotbed of Obeah, the West Indian Zombii cult of sorcery and magic. And it is here they find their true peril is just beginning.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I always listen to SETS of books in the order suggested, written or clearly labeled as 1,2,3,4 etc. SO, Imagine my EXTREME DISAPPOINTMENT after already listening to the previous 8 books & here come book # 9 that is so ridiculously placed into this otherwise SUPERB SET of books..... This book should be a " Stand Alone " book with totally different characters, or at the very least, NOT IN THIS SET OF 12 BOOKS !!!!!!!!!! This book screws up the entire series as it is so out of line with all the other 11 books of this 12 book set ....... It goes WAY OUT IN LEFT FIELD from the usual Genre that Agent Pendergast is usually mixed up in....... I ALSO can't stand that this book kills off a very great Character from all the previous 8 books ( besides this one ) that I had listened to @ that point, now I have the very last one yet to go........ I wish THIS BOOK had NEVER been part of this series, I despise Zombie Books & Movies to boot, thus really ticking me off that these 2 Fantastic Writers really SCREWED UP A GREAT SERIES WITH SUCH A RIDICULOUS BOOK to ACCOMPANY such a SUPERB SET, Thus Far...... !!!!!

Would you ever listen to anything by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child again?

    ABSOLUTELY............

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Rene Auberjonois?

    SCOTT BRICK

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

NOT IN MY HUMBLE OPINION !!!!!!!!!

    Any additional comments?

IF IT IS LESS EXPENSIVE TO BUY ALL 12 BOOKS IN THIS SERIES AT ONCE INSTEAD OF BUYING ALL THE OTHER 11 ONE AT A TIME, THEN BY ALL MEANS DO SO........ BUT, DON'T BE SURPRISED BY HOW " OUT OF PLACE " THIS BOOK IS IF YOU CHOOSE TO LISTEN TO IT ................

Why we think it’s a great listen: Some books are meant to be read; others are meant to be heard – Water for Elephants falls into the second group, and is one of the best examples we have of how a powerful performance enhances a great story. Nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski reflects back on his wild and wondrous days with a circus. It's the Depression Era and Jacob, finding himself parentless and penniless, joins the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Superb story, suspenseful, colorful characters, just a really great book that can be listened to in a day's time.... Very entertaining, great love story, great bad guys & I will listen to it many times in the future.......

Who was your favorite character and why?

Jacob : Because he is such a respectable, honorable, hard working Man, with no delusions about what life is about & I really - LOVE the way it is written with him as an old Man looking back on his young Adulthood & is NOT DONE IN A CONFUSING WAY !!!!

What does David LeDoux and John Randolph Jones bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Exceptionally easy to comprehend, great reading voices, flawless transitions, emotions well understood with each reader's voice........

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yes : Rosie's appearance & her horrific maltreatment.......

    Any additional comments?

Just one of those books that moves you, your heart cheers & cries, feels great, feels sad, but all in all it is a terrifically written book & very moving & a feel good book all in all....
