  • Monster Hunter International

    • UNABRIDGED (23 hrs and 34 mins)
    • By Larry Correia
    • Narrated By Oliver Wyman
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Five days after Owen Zastava Pitt pushed his insufferable boss out of a 14th story window, he woke up in the hospital with a scarred face, an unbelievable memory, and a job offer. It turns out that monsters are real. All the things from myth, legend, and B-movies are out there, waiting in the shadows. Some of them are evil, and some are just hungry. Monster Hunter International is the premier eradication company in the business. And now Owen is their newest recruit.

What made the experience of listening to Monster Hunter International the most enjoyable?

I almost skipped this book because some reviewers related it to Fox News and political propaganda. I am glad I went ahead and gave it a chance. The book is about characters who are anti-government not pro Republican idealism. How could it be otherwise when the main characters are individuals who loves their guns? But seriously, this is not a political book even if the books characters have libertarian ideas concerning Gun laws and monster hunting. They remind me of the Malcome Reynolds character from Fire Fly:

"Simon: So does it happen a lot? Government commandeering your ship, telling you where to go?
Mal: That's what governments are for... get in a man's way.

This book is exactly what the title advertises - Monster Hunting Fun. Great first book in the series! If you like Dresden give this one a chance!

Other Books I like: Dresden Files by Butcher, Richard Sharpe Series by Bernard Cornwell, Wheel of Time by Jordan/ Sanderson, LOTR by Tolkien, Aubrey/ Maturin Series by Patric O'brian, March Up Country Series By David Webber and John Ringo.

What other book might you compare Monster Hunter International to and why?

Dresden Files because it happens in the world not in another reality. Although this is not another wizard series hidden from society.

Which character – as performed by Oliver Wyman – was your favorite?

Main Character Owen and Julie were both great.

    Any additional comments?

The reader did a great job. Sometimes a bad reader will kill a book, but this one was solid story with a solid performance. I'm going start book two now. Happy listening.

  • Starship: Mutiny

    • UNABRIDGED (7 hrs and 35 mins)
    • By Mike Resnick
    • Narrated By Jonathan Davis, Mike Resnick

The date is 1966 of the Galactic Era, almost three thousand years from now, and the Republic, created by the human race - but not yet dominated by it - finds itself in an all-out war. They stand against the Teroni Federation, an alliance of races that resent Man's growing military and economic power. The main battles are taking place in the Spiral Arm and toward the Core. But far out on the Rim, the Theodore Roosevelt is one of three ships charged with protecting the Phoenix Cluster.

The author gives us an explanation as to why he wrote the series to begin our tale. He says he is interested in writing the story of a leader.

He fails. The main character is not a leader. He is a subverter. It just so happens that he is smarter and more "intuitive" than all his superiors. His superiors are so ridgidly unbelieveable it strains the imagination (of the reader!).This stereotyped story of untinking space marines and a stupid face saving military hierarchy was simply absurd. The main character stands out because he is a "thinker" while everyone else are lazy ignorant louts. Unbelievable! It as if the author's intended audience was 6th grade boys and he was writing in the media frenzy at the end of the Vietnam War.

I will not be listening to the rest of the series and I love a good series.

  • Hyperion

    • UNABRIDGED (20 hrs and 44 mins)
    • By Dan Simmons
    • Narrated By Marc Vietor, Allyson Johnson, Kevin Pariseau, and others
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

On the world called Hyperion, beyond the law of the Hegemony of Man, there waits the creature called the Shrike. There are those who worship it. There are those who fear it. And there are those who have vowed to destroy it. In the Valley of the Time Tombs, where huge, brooding structures move backward through time, the Shrike waits for them all.

I was really looking forward to this book after reading some reviews. I was terribly disappointed! The book ends where the story should really begin. This was like listening to a prequel to a series. One of those books that you listen to/ read because you already love the characters. These characters are not lovable. This book is really the background stories for a group of characters that share how or why they found themselves on the pilgrimage to the Shrike Temple/ Time Tombs. I found I couldn't careless about the majority of them. I love a series! Wheel of Time, Lord of the Rings, Miles Vorkosigan Novels, Lost Fleet Series, John Scalzi's Old Man's War Series, and on and on ... I came willing to be pleased and left disgusted and disappointed. If I could give less than 1 star I would, and I really wanted to listen to good story! This was not it!
