Alone and un-tethered, feeling lost in the country he had come to regard as home, Hans stumbles upon the vibrant New York subculture of cricket, where he revisits his lost childhood and, thanks to a friendship with a charismatic and charming Trinidadian named Chuck Ramkissoon, begins to reconnect with his life and his adopted country. Ramkissoon, a Gatsby-like figure who is part idealist and part operator, introduces Hans to an "other" New York populated by immigrants and strivers of every race and nationality.

This is an intriguing and interesting book about New York after 9-11. It focuses on a wealthy European banker with few friends who spends most of his leisure time playing cricket with third world immigrants after his wife flees New York. It is lucid and well narrated (the Indian/Trinidad accents seem authentic.) Its is intriguing and a bit of a mystery. I enjoyed it.

Under a clear blue September sky, America's financial center in lower Manhattan became the site of the largest, deadliest terrorist attack in the nation's history. It was September 16, 1920. Four hundred people were killed or injured. The country was appalled by the magnitude and savagery of the incomprehensible attack, which remains unsolved to this day.The bomb that devastated Wall Street in 1920 explodes in the opening pages of The Death Instinct, Jed Rubenfeld's provocative and mesmerizing new novel.

There is a lot going on in this book. That makes it a good diversion but it also makes it seem contrived after a while. The book is diverting and the reader is first rate. I think the reader did a fantastic job.

Eldritch Swan is a dead man. Or at least that is what his nephew Stephen has always been told. Until one day Eldritch walks back into his life after 36 years in an Irish prison. He won’t reveal any of the details of his incarceration, insisting only that he is innocent of any crime. His return should be of interest to no-one.

This was an enjoyable and unpredictable English mystery/thriller. Too often it is easy to guess the solution to a mystery. This book is complex, it jumps between World War II era and the present. The characters were interesting and the narrator was quite good.
