Garrison Keillor's latest book is about the wedding of a girl named Dede Ingebretson, who comes home from California with a guy named Brent. Dede has made a fortune in veterinary aromatherapy; Brent bears a strong resemblance to a man wanted for extortion who's pictured on a poster in the town's post office. Then there's the memorial service for Dede's aunt Evelyn, who led a footloose and adventurous life after the death of her husband 17 years previously.

Couldn't get through it. Not as entertaining as the radio show. Too dark of a story.

  • The Disappearing Spoon: And Other True Tales of Madness, Love, and the History of the World from the Periodic Table of the Elements

    Story

Reporter Sam Kean reveals the periodic table as it’s never been seen before. Not only is it one of man's crowning scientific achievements, it's also a treasure trove of stories of passion, adventure, betrayal, and obsession. The infectious tales and astounding details in The Disappearing Spoon follow carbon, neon, silicon, and gold as they play out their parts in human history, finance, mythology, war, the arts, poison, and the lives of the (frequently) mad scientists who discovered them.

Ethan M. says: "Excellent, if unfocused"

I thought there would be more about the people involved with the discoveries than there was. If you really like science and enjoy the academics of it, this is for you.

In the spring of 1974, Calliope Stephanides, a student at a girls' school in Grosse Pointe, finds herself drawn to a chain-smoking, strawberry-blonde classmate with a gift for acting. The passion that furtively develops between them - along with Callie's failure to develop physically - leads Callie to suspect that she is not like other girls. In fact, she is not really a girl at all.

    Story

Except for the mispronounciations of some of the street names (I'm from this area), this reader did a great job. I found this story very interesting and heartwarming. Although we are not Greek, I found the assimilation issues interesting and could relate them to my own family.
If you think you might be put off by the fact that he is a hermaphrodite, dont be. This is a good story about a confused person in an interesting time and place.

On May 13, 1945, 24 American servicemen and WACs boarded a transport plane for a sightseeing trip over “Shangri-La,” a beautiful and mysterious valley deep within the jungle-covered mountains of Dutch New Guinea. Unlike the peaceful Tibetan monks of James Hilton’s best-selling novel Lost Horizon, this Shangri-La was home to spear-carrying tribesmen, warriors rumored to be cannibals. But the pleasure tour became an unforgettable battle for survival when the plane crashed. Miraculously, three passengers pulled through.

Don't let the fact that the author is reading this steer you away, he does a great job. He gives just the right amount of background information on the characters and events, keeping the story moving and interesting.

Academy Award nominee Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction, Star Wars films), fresh off the success of his uproarious, Audie-nominated performance of the mock children’s book Go the F**k to Sleep, delivers a swaggering, darkly-humored rendering of Chester Himes’ classic first novel.

The story was OK but I thought the cop side of the story was under-developed.

They were just kids when they stumbled upon the horror of their hometown. Now, as adults, none of them can withstand the force that has drawn them all back to Derry, Maine, to face the nightmare without end, and the evil without a name.

    Parola138 says: "I thought I was desensitized"
    "My best listen to date."
    Overall

I was hesitant to listen to this book because I had already seen the movie but the reviews were so good that I decided to get it and I am so glad I did. As always the book was better than the movie and this was a good movie. Steven Weber is an absolutely phenomenal reader. As anyone who has read Mr. King knows, he can develop characters like nobody's business and Mr. Weber brought them to life with his heartfelt and emotional reading. Whatever the appropriate audible phrase is for page-turner, this qualifies as one. I have been listening to books for years and choose books by author and reader. I have added Weber to the top of my list. And although this book is long, I found myself sad when it was nearing the end. I have only one question, when can we expect The Stand read by Steven Weber?

Why we think it’s a great listen: The most celebrated performance in all of Audible’s history, The Help has nearly 2,000 5-star reviews from your fellow listeners. We hear the print book’s not bad, either. In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women - mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends - view one another.

Jan says: "What a great surprise!"
    "Loved this book."

Not only was this a great story, but the narration was phenomenal. I urge people who have read this book to also listen to it to really appreciate the richness of the story and the characters.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Seabiscuit was a runaway success, and Hillenbrand’s done it again with another true-life account about beating unbelievable odds. On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared.....

Anastasia Burke says: "Hillenbrand could make even laundry fascinating!"
    "Great story!"
    Overall

As the other reviews indicated, this was a great listen. The story was compelling and Edward Hermann does a fantastic job narrating. This is one not to be missed.

Nine people have been slain in New York City, nine strangers with nothing in common - the apparent victims of a frighteningly elusive serial killer. Only one thing links the dead: postcards they received, mailed from Las Vegas, announcing the day they would die.

I enjoyed this book very much. A very good story with interesting characters and plot twists.
