  • Royal Assassin: The Farseer Trilogy, Book 2

    • UNABRIDGED (29 hrs and 17 mins)
    • By Robin Hobb
    • Narrated By Paul Boehmer
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Young Fitz, the illegitimate son of the noble Prince Chivalry, is ignored by all royalty except the devious King Shrewd, who has had him tutored him in the dark arts of the assassin. He has barely survived his first, soul-shattering mission, and when he returns to the court, he is thrown headfirst into the tumult of royal life.

Would you try another book from Robin Hobb and/or Paul Boehmer?

Maybe if I was in the mood for an energy draining, pain inflicting, experience. An experience that left me with the feeling of... hmmm the hero could have been my next door neighbor only more predictable, less heroic, and fully miserable all the time. If you were given a super power would you just "kind of use it". No one else could do this special thing but you have the power but no inclination? I had a hard time with some of the "Human" traits brought out in the characters. But I liked the book to continue reading it through to the end. This was my first time reading a Robin Hobb story, I don't know anything about the author or his other works. I did like some of his writing style, and may read something in the future as some authors change their style and mood between works.

Has Royal Assassin turned you off from other books in this genre?

No, of course not. Although the trend, for the last decade in movies and books has been to take joy out of the story, any story, and replace it with 'Real' practical experiences, misery and anti-climatic endings. This story was no different. I have hope though, that some epic fantasy authors will try something different... maybe a happy ending filled with magic and joy, something that leaves the reader with a feeling that by reading the book, it has somehow fundamentally changed the way the reader wants to live their life. Makes the reader want to be better. Breath of fresh air. This was not that book.

What about Paul Boehmer’s performance did you like?

At first no, but he grew on me. His voice is very light and doesn't resonate very well, however he is technically a master. His tones and delivery are excellent. At one point I was so disgusted with the story, that I wasn't sure why I was still listening. I determined that is was Paul voice and delivery. Although Robin's story was kind of dark and dreary, Paul's voice was the light, and filled me with a kind of hope, that kept me moving through endless awkward predicaments.

Did Royal Assassin inspire you to do anything?

Yes, the hole left in my foot by the nail I drove through it, is healing well. Luckily the Elf Bark tea has blocked all thoughts about my reading experience.

    Any additional comments?

If your not into animal stories, or human/animal relationships you may want to stay away from this series. Although the title says assassin, and makes you think of castles, a lot of the book revolves around animals in great detail to the point where I wondered why it wasn't called wolf prince or the like. However if you love animals and animal behavior and relationships, you will probably love this trilogy.
