The author does an amazing job brining you into the main characters world. You feel like you know Max and understand him. You feel sorry for the ex-con who's policeman son is killed the day before he gets out of prison. There is alot of emotion in the book but it isn't over the top. The narration is good.
Although some people didn't like Scott Brick, I didn't mind him as an narrator. I have listened to other books he has done and like his calm style. I think the main character in the book has been working hard, most of his adult life, to keep his life looking as average as possible. I think the restrained narration brings those feelings to the character. I liked the suspense in this book. You are surprised in many of the plot twist and most of them feel believable. It is one of those books you can see easily turning into a movie. The only thing I found annoying was the daughter character. She was way too precocious for 8. Over all, I think it was a credit well spent. Not the best book I've ever read but a good read none the less.
I have listened to this book several times and each time, I find it more interesting. It makes me wish I was in a book club. You could compare and contrast the main characters' story lines and debate what pushed Skippy to his decision. You could go through most of the characters and debate why they did what they did and how their actions, or lack there of, contributed to Skippy's life as well as their own. I was a little disconcerted at times because I have 2 young boys and it made we worry at times how they would cope with some of the things that these boys dealt with and how well you really know your teenage children. I didn't think it was slow to start. I like long books because I usually only get 1 book a month so I like to make them last! I didn't think the story drug like other people mentioned. I usually shy away from multiple narrators because they sound like a bad high school plays but this one was really well done. If you like stories with well developed characters, this one might be for you.
I read this book for the first time in Middle School and have read it several times since. I also love the movie. Now that I'm 40 and DO NOT like romance novels, I wasn't sure that I wanted to listen to it. Linda Stephens is remarkable! She does an amazing job narrating this book! Sometimes you do want to slap the characters upside their heads. But you have to remember the time and how young Scarlet is. The use of the "N Word" is also part of the time. A really great listen and interesting book.
This is the second in what, I believe, is a 3 part series. This book give more insight to Lisbeth and her background. If you haven't read The Girl With The Dragon Tatoo, it won't be as enjoyable. I am a little suprised I like these books as much as I do but I have found all the characters compelling and the story is well written!
A great story line. Interesting to read. If you like crime stories, this is a pretty good one.
I really liked this book. The characters were fun without being unbelievable and was an easy, relaxing listen. I will look into buying more of his books.
This book was fun and interesting without being too much of a tear jerker. If she is accurate in her story, it really opens your eyes to how women are treated in Afganistan and how few options these women have.
I kept waiting for this book to take off. Carrington's writing was compared to Grafton and Evanovich but I think that is being a little kind. Of the 2, I would say more Grafton than Evanovich. The sexual chemistry between Sophie and her love interst was lame. The story line is tired: Greek girl; botched marriage; instead of working in family restaurant goes in different direction. I couldn't count the number of times she referenced her almost-marriage. I don't know if it is the first in the series. If it is, I might give her a second chance but if your are looking for a fun story with interesting characters, this is a little disapointing.
After reading the Monster of Venice, I wanted to check out other books by Douglas Preston and came across Relic. After reading the summary , I dismissed it because I do not like supernatural-themed books. I bought it on sale, not realizing what I bought and almost didn't listen to it. But I gave it a chance and I really liked it. The authors are talented and the characters are interesting. They make something that is unbelievable, believable. The narration is good, too.
