Auction house appraiser Jude leaves London for her dream job at Starbrough Hall, an estate in the countryside, examining and pricing the manuscripts and instruments of an 18th-century astronomer. She is welcomed by Chantal Wickham, and Jude feels close to the old woman at once. Hard times have forced the Wickham family to sell the astronomer's work, their land, and with it, the timeworn tower that lies nearby. Jude's arrival brings a host of childhood memories. She meets Euan, a famed writer and naturalist who lives in the cottage at the foot of the tower, where Jude's grandfather once lived.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

For the most part. The plot was extremely interesting and well done. Would have loved to give it another star. However, the relationships were all right out of a juvenile romance novel.

Who was your favorite character and why?

    Esther. Was the most interesting.

What didn’t you like about Jilly Bond’s performance?

Too uneven. She kept changing styles for the characters. The children's voices were cloying. I did love her grandmother voice, though.

The first book in an original mystery series featuring 28-year-old Veronica Mars, back in action after the events of Veronica Mars: The Movie. With the help of old friends - Logan Echolls, Mac Mackenzie, Wallace Fennel, and even Dick Casablancas - Veronica is ready to take on Neptune's darkest cases with her trademark sass and smarts.

What did you like best about Veronica Mars? What did you like least?

The plot was excellent. The writing was kind of weak.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Kristen Bell?

Yes. Love her voice. Love her in the TV show and movie. Yet, it sometimes felt as though the project was rushed and the narration wasn't always at its best.

From the celebrated author of The Secret Life of Bees, a magnificent novel about two unforgettable American women. Writing at the height of her narrative and imaginative gifts, Sue Monk Kidd presents a masterpiece of hope, daring, the quest for freedom, and the desire to have a voice in the world - and it is now the newest Oprah’s Book Club 2.0 selection. Hetty “Handful” Grimke, an urban slave in early nineteenth century Charleston, yearns for life beyond the suffocating walls that enclose her within the wealthy Grimke household. The Grimke’s daughter, Sarah, has known from an early age she is meant to do something large in the world, but she is hemmed in by the limits imposed on women.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Wish the author would have been more skilled at blending research into her story. Felt like the story was halted too often by clumsily inserted historical details. It didn't really flow until last quarter of the book.

If you’ve listened to books by Sue Monk Kidd before, how does this one compare?

Not as well. The Secret Life of Bees was much better.

How could the performance have been better?

Accent didn't seem consistent. Did not like Sarah's voice.

Do you think The Invention of Wings needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

    No.

    Any additional comments?

So much potential...just couldn't maintain it throughout book.

  • Rose: My Life in Service to Lady Astor

In 1928, Rosina Harrison arrived at the illustrious household of the Astor family to take up her new position as personal maid to the infamously temperamental Lady Nancy Astor, who sat in Parliament, entertained royalty, and traveled the world. "She's not a lady as you would understand a lady" was the butler's ominous warning. But what no one expected was that the iron-willed Lady Astor was about to meet her match in the no-nonsense, whip-smart girl from the country.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Yes, it had a very interesting point of view at a particular time in history.

What did you like best about this story?

    Both of the ladies personalities.

What three words best describe Wanda McCaddon’s voice?

    Rich, interesting, rushed...

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Yes, if sets were well done.

    Any additional comments?

Loved the reader's voice, but hated the editing of it. It was a quicker pace, but sometimes had nice pauses in between paragraphs. Other times it was one long rush of words after another. Quite exhausting, really. Her intonations and voices were excellent and I would like to try her again under another editor/director.

It is Nick and Amy Dunne's fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick's clever and beautiful wife disappears from their rented McMansion on the Mississippi River. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn't doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media - as well as Amy's fiercely doting parents - the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he's definitely bitter - but is he really a killer?

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

This book just didn't live up to the hype...plodding...interesting enough to not (quite) stop listening...yet just didn't deliver as promised.
