  • Our Miss Brooks: Volume Two

    • ORIGINAL (8 hrs and 54 mins)
    • By Eve Arden, Jeff Chandler, Gale Gordon, and others
    • Narrated By Eve Arden

Pay attention class! Here are 18 more entertaining episodes of America's most engaging English Teacher - Our Miss Brooks!Today's lessons have less to do with language and more to do with love, as the falteringly forward Connie Brooks (Eve Arden) continues her quest for the romantically reserved Mr. Boynton (Jeff Chandler). Overseeing, and undermining, our heroine is the peevish Principal Conklin (Gale Gordon). And, dutiful student Walter Denton (Richard Crenna) is always on hand - along with side-kick Stretch Snodgrass - for Miss Brooks misadventures.

Where does Our Miss Brooks: Volume Two rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

    Top 10.

Who was your favorite character and why?

It's a tie between Miss Brooks and Mr. Boyton. Both characters are well acted and Eve Arden seems to have a natural fit into her character.

Have you listened to any of Eve Arden’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I listen to these episodes at night or put them on in the background when I am working.

    Any additional comments?

They just don't make quality entertainment like this anymore.

Holiday hilarity and history with the Great Gildersleeve - radio's most lovable windbag! The inimitable Harold Peary, with his melodious baritone voice and trademark warbling laugh, achieved stardom portraying Gildersleeve on the first ever spin-off series in broadcast history!

    Jim says: "Excellent"
    "More Old Time Entertainment"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

The shows are fun to listen to. Never childish or offensive as so many shows these days seem to be.

What does Harold Peary and Bill Mills bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

A natural fit into their roles.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

No - they are just fun to listen to..

    Any additional comments?

Entertainment today should look back to these shows and learn what quality is all about. Entertainment without offensive language and stupid storylines.

  • Lonesome Dove

    • UNABRIDGED (36 hrs and 11 mins)
    • By Larry McMurtry
    • Narrated By Lee Horsley

Larry McMurtry's American epic, set in the late 19th century, tells the story of a cattle drive from Texas to Montana, a drive that represents not only a daring foolhardy adventure, but a part of the American Dream for everyone involved.

    A. Wright says: "Inspired reading of a great book"
    "Thoroughly Enjoyed this Book"
If you could sum up Lonesome Dove in three words, what would they be?

    Detailed wonderful story.

What did you like best about this story?

It touches all of your emotions. There is several stories within one that all eventually intertwine with each other.

What does Lee Horsley bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He did a fantastic job narrating this book. He brought life to all of the characters. Larry McMurtry paints the setting and the characters in his words, while Lee Horsley breathes life into it. After a short time you can actually "see" everything in your mind and know which character was speaking even without the names of the characters being identified.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Between the description and writing by Larry McMurtry and the various voices of each of the characters I found myself feeling loss and sadness when one of my favourite characters passed on in the story. I was disappointed that the character died, but I give credit to the narrator and author for doing such a great job that it would invoke such feelings.

    Any additional comments?

A wonderful story! I will have to watch the movie now.

  • Shiny Happy Jihad

    • ORIGINAL (1 hr and 12 mins)
    • By Joe Rogan
    • Narrated By Joe Rogan

Recorded September 2006, at the Cobbs Comedy Club in San Francisco. Tracks include "Fear Factor", "Pot, Jet Packs, and Peace in the Middle East", "72 Virgins", and more.

Dan says: "One of the best"
    "Could be funny but..."
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Anyone that is incapable of carrying a conversation without swearing ten times in a five word sentence.

How could the performance have been better?

    Curb the language.

    Any additional comments?

The true stand-ups and humorous speakers are funny without vulgarity. The ones that cannot get through a performance without swearing every third or fourth word are amateurs. This guy has no class and his language serves only to distract from the performance. I am glad I never saw this guy live. After listening to how he interacts with his audience I would have left.
