"yet another winner"
This is a fabulous series of books that are simply an enjoyable listen! No stress no strain - I have listened to several in this series this summer and I find them light and refreshing. The narrator has a pleasant voice and a wonderful accent. Nothing better than sitting back with a big mug of bush tea and enjoying a tale by Alexander McCall Smith.
"drab and slow"
was very disappointed with this book. the brief bio looked good..but i found it really dragged. "the condition" so to speak; didn't really develop until the later part of section 2 -- and was pretty much insignificant. This book lost my attention on many occasions and really required effort to keep listening. I found most of the characters drab and the plot yawned along at a snails pace.
"brilliant"
Not familar with Mr. Buckley's other works or all that familar with his famous father (other than name). I found this to be an honest; and riviting account of a son loosing his parents. Rich or poor; young or old..some truths stand true for all - we have a life beginning and a life end.
Elequantly written with all the honesty of someone has lived the experience; and has put that experience to paper. Reguadless of his famous name - he lost mum and pup; and tells a poinant tale of the difficult journey of becoming an orphan at age 55.
"the ladies detective agency is number 1"
once again alexander mccall smith does not disappoint. i believe this is number 10 in the detective agency series and i have enjoyed it as much as all the rest. the narration is fabulous and the story flows so smoothly.. light easy summertime listening. the tiny white van? the husband stealer? it's all here.
"Triumph over tragidy"
Well written and narrated. This is a long listen (over 15 hours) and some of the content is disturbing and difficult to listen to. At times it seems a long hall with depressing content. That being said, it is incredibly informative. I was familar with the organization through the news and felt like I was getting an insiders look through this book. "escape" says it all - so thankful for the exhale ending.
"nice light christmas story"
I enjoyed this light christmas book about generations working on an unfinished quilt. It was light, pleasant, with a nice Christmas ring to it. An easy festive listen.
"disappointing narration"
I purchased this book dispite the other reviews about the quality of the narration because the story sounded so good. Regretfully when you "listen" to an audio book the narration far more essential than I gave credit. I found this book to be almost unbearable. I have yet to hear anything like it. The narrator is monotone and does not use inflection to emphasise anything. He reads quickly and I found myself rethinking passages trying to add emphasis where it was needed. Almost impossible unless you have insomnia and need to sleep.
"funny funny classic Erma"
Suburban bliss anywhere in the 60's 70's or even 80's. I laughed out loud at times. Such an insiders look at all that was "must have" during the suburban boom. If you've ever lived or dreamed of living in Suburbia you will find this audio book bordering on historically accurate in a rib tickling way!
"Another Hit for McCall Smith"
The ongoing saga of Scotland street. Thoroughly enjoyed this title as much as the others in this series. Like a soap opera for your ears. Watching the characters evolve...the end of the book is always bittersweet because your left hanging until the next on comes out.
"Way too many Latter Day Saints!"
I was HIGHLY disappointed with this book!
Felt it would have been better titled "How the MORMON CHURCH and our faith helped us during Elizabeth's homecoming"
The first 90 minutes of listening was nearly unbearable! It was all religion, praying and quoting scripture.
I wasn't looking for the guts and gore of Elizabeth's kidnapping but I found this book smuthering with way to many latter day saints!
Being on a tight festive budget I stuck with the book and it did improve a tiny bit. Who they met with, the day to day trials etc.
I am glad their story turned out well and they got their miracle - but it was WAY WAY too prayerful, preachy and biblical for my taste. Very disappointing.
"Informative - the man behind the work!"
I knew zero about Marcel Proust prior to listening to this audio book. His name seems to come up frequently in my circle of interest and and I was curious. I listen for pleasure and didn't want to invest in a 7 book literary masterpiece if it was dry and dated. I decided I would investigate the author before venturing onto the work. Glad I did - decided to give book 1 (Swann's way) a try.
