St. Elizabeth's is a home for unwed mothers in the 1960s. Life there is not unpleasant, and for most, it is temporary. Not so for Rose, a beautiful, mysterious woman who comes to the home pregnant but not unwed. She plans to give up her baby because she knows she cannot be the mother it needs.

But St. Elizabeth's is near a healing spring, and when Rose's time draws near, she cannot go through with her plans, not all of them.

I LOVE Ann Patchett, but this novel left me disappointed. Ann Patchett has a way of making her characters completely relatable. Even though they could not be less similar to you, you find yourself completely invested in him/her. I could not relate to the main character in this book, however. Instead, I came to despise her. I was also disappointed in the ending -- or lack there of. Too bad.

At the core of this book is an appalling double murder committed by two Mormon fundamentalist brothers, Ron and Dan Lafferty, who insist they received a revelation from God commanding them to kill their blameless victims. Weaving the story of the Lafferty brothers and their fanatical brethren with a clear-eyed look at Mormonism's violent past, Krakauer examines the underbelly of the most successful homegrown faith in the United States, and finds a distinctly American brand of religious extremism.

Krakauer is one of my favorite non-fiction writers so I didn't even bother to read the reviews or summary of this book, I don't regret my purchase in the least. I found his chronicle of the Mormon faith to be fascinating, frustrating and thought provoking all at once.

It is Nick and Amy Dunne's fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick's clever and beautiful wife disappears from their rented McMansion on the Mississippi River. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn't doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media - as well as Amy's fiercely doting parents - the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he's definitely bitter - but is he really a killer?

    Story
Is there anything you would change about this book?

Yes. The storyline. It was an intriguing topic with a lot of potential but very anticlimactic.

Would you be willing to try another book from Gillian Flynn? Why or why not?

Probably not. Her story was engaging in that you thought it was building up to something...but it wasn't. kKnd of a let down. Probably indicative of her other work.

Have you listened to any of Julia Whelan and Kirby Heyborne ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    Yes. They are good performers.

Did Gone Girl inspire you to do anything?

Find another book to listen to...

    Any additional comments?

    Not overly impressed.
