As the summer of 2004 draws to a close, Archy Stallings and Nat Jaffe are still hanging in there - longtime friends, bandmates, and co-regents of Brokeland Records, a kingdom of used vinyl located in the borderlands of Berkeley and Oakland. Their wives, Gwen Shanks and Aviva Roth-Jaffe, are the Berkeley Birth Partners, a pair of semi-legendary midwives who have welcomed, between them, more than a thousand newly minted citizens into the dented utopia at whose heart - half tavern, half temple - stands Brokeland Records.

Chabon has done it again. Can't get enough of his books. They feel real. If you've shopped for vinyl records in Oakland, you will know what I mean. Can't wait for his next one

Seth Weinstein knew Tina was way out of his league in pretty much any way you could imagine, which is why it continued to astonish him that he was on the plane now for their destination wedding in Florida. The Groom Posse had already sprung an airport prank on him, and he'd survived it, and if that was the worst of it, everything should be okay. Smooth sailing from now on. Seth has absolutely no idea what he's about to get into.

It is difficult to listen to a Dave Barry book without laughing out loud. Truck drivers passing you on the highway, while you listen to his work, will think you are a lunatic ... unless they are also listening to a Dave Barry Book.

Pocket has been Lear's cherished fool for years. So naturally Pocket is at his brainless, elderly liege's side when Lear demands that his kids swear to him their undying love and devotion. Of course Goneril and Regan are only too happy to brownnose Dad. But Cordelia believes that her father's request is kind of...well...stupid, and her blunt honesty ends up costing her her rightful share of the kingdom and earns her a banishment to boot.

Warning: If you are a prude, stay away. Moore is funny and bawdy, much like Shakespeare was in his own time. This is King Lear from a very twisted perspective. Moore's fans will love it. Those of us who teach Shakespeare in college will appreciate his re-telling as much as we appreciated Jane Smiley's re-telling of the same story in A Thousand Acres.

Given the importance of what they do, and the controversies that often surround them, and the violent people they sometimes confront, it is remarkable that in the history of this country only four active federal judges have been murdered. Judge Raymond Fawcett has just become number five.... Nothing is as it seems and everything’s fair game in this wickedly clever new novel from John Grisham, the undisputed master of the legal thriller.

OK ... five or more people risk prison, their lives, and more for a "jackpot" they must split of about 8 million dollars. Grisham: That's what Melky Cabrera got each year for two years just to play baseball for the Blue Jays. Add another zero to make it interesting. By today's standards, 80 million dollars will get you a mediocre free agent pitcher for a few years.

After a while, it just didn't seem that exciting by those standards.

No one but Stephen King could tell this story about the darkness at the heart of the unknown and our compulsion to investigate the unexplained. With echoes of Dashiell Hammett's The Maltese Falcon and the work of Graham Greene, one of the world's great storytellers presents a surprising tale that explores the nature of mystery itself.

I like King's stuff. It is fun to see what the television and film screenplay writers do with his work. Usually it falls short. This is an exception. The television series "Haven," inspired by this short work, is very creative. This is worth listening to, if for no other reason, than it is an interesting to see what the script writers had to start with ... and not much more.
