    Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead, serving in the household of the enigmatic Commander and his bitter wife. She may go out once a day to markets whose signs are now pictures because women are not allowed to read. She must pray that the Commander makes her pregnant, for in a time of declining birthrates her value lies in her fertility, and failure means exile to the dangerously polluted Colonies. Offred can remember a time when she lived with her husband and daughter and had a job, before she lost even her own name....

    What did you love best about The Handmaid's Tale?

    I liked that it was from the point of view of a regular girl, not the heroic one, not the milquetoast. It was the feeling that most of us would probably have, like I wish I could have been stronger.


    What did you like best about this story?

    That the story was pulled together at the end, it didn't leave us hanging with no insight as to what the trigger and outcome of the Gilead soceity.


    Which character – as performed by Claire Danes – was your favorite?

    I liked them all, she was very convincing in every one. I could almost see Janine and Moira.


    Any additional comments?

    Like "The Road" by Cormac McCarthy it makes you think about how you would handle a situation that no one wants to go through. AND makes you realize that maybe we aren't so bad off right now and it IS worth it to stay involved in life and not just take a cynical backseat to current issues.
