"Oooh, a chilling premise. Let's find out what happened to these missing girls! Creepy! Who did this? Are they satanic? Are they... oh, I'm getting bored. yawn. Wait, what just happened? Better rewind... Oh, okay, this is getting better... Ooooh no way! Wow this is getting good!... Oh. Actually, that's kind of a letdown.... Well, I saw that coming. Should I just stop listening? No, i really want to see what happens. What should I have for dinner? ..."
-My brain while listening to this book
Another enthralling and greatly entertaining novel by Liane Moriarty with the usual twisty storyline and unreliable characters. Kept me interested and guessing until the end. Bonus points for subtly infusing a great whodunit with a commentary on domestic abuse and violence against women. Five stars for a thoroughly engrossing work of fiction.
Why did I waste a credit on this?
I wanted lighter fare, and this was a little too light for me.
I thought E.G. had a reputation for "smart" chick-lit, but this was eye-rolling and trite. Granted, not as bad as a lot of the genre, but not what I'd hoped for.
Then again I don't typically care for chick-lit. But a good story is a good story, and this one is just OK.
I want to love it, too, but I cannot get into it. I have tried time and again to get absorbed but it's just too quiet for me.
I loved ALIAS GRACE by Margaret Atwood, a book to which BURIAL RITES is compared favorably by many critics. Sigh, I will have to give it another try I suppose... but I just don't want to.
Probably better read than listened to.
This book somehow manages to be a classic AND a page-turner. Delivers a very diffcult, important commentary. A necessary read as well as an enjoyable one, with a great plot and fast-paced drama (except for the overlong court scene which could have been whittled down some). Fantastic.
Not really, but it wants to be.
I shouldn't ridicule, because I really enjoyed this book quite a bit. But I was able to forgive the author her melodramatic writing. I don't know if you will be.
Also, this is a book which requires the reading of multiple PDFs. Fake newspaper articles and such. I was annoyed by this factor and it almost turned me off, but I persevered and found myself sucked in quickly.
Crazy ending may infuriate you, or you may love it. I don't like to give away things.
Warning: narrator is annoying, and so are the characters. Somehow I enjoyed it anyway.
It's good, not great, but has enough page-turning-ness to rate decently with me. A girl has to re-invent herself after a tragic misfortune. A boy is mysterious and gets on her nerves. Teens are tough in the face of life's unfolding tragedies. Teens.
Wow, I loved this one. Well done mystery without being all "it's a mystery for women!"
Single White Female meets Heavenly Creatures, sort of. A page-turner.
I slogged through this book. I almost didn't finish. GONE GIRL is exceptional. This book is...not.
Maybe it would have been a better read– the narrator was so annoying. Basically a group of awful people have a snooty dinner in a boring restaurant and manage not to directly discuss the horrible reason they are gathered together: their sons have done something heinous. The adults' handling of this despicable act is the crux of this story. It made me feel bad, and sad, and angry in a dull sort of way.
This is a book with literary merit that does not make for a great listen. I liked it better in hindsight.
If you liked RED DAWN and 28 DAYS LATER and all those other zombie apocalypse movies and books you'll enjoy this one. A fast-paced YA (that means young adult) for everyone, not just teens. This book is going to be a movie, of course, cuz it's AWESOME. Made a 12 hour car ride fly by!
Spans the lives of privileged and not-so-privileged NYC kids who become NYC adults and have lives that intertwine and things happen that are both good and bad and people have regrets and do some awful things to one another but we love them anyway. Just like life!
