For years, our concept of the self and well-being has been dominated by the notion of self-esteem, while the old fashioned value of willpower has been disparaged by psychologists who argued that we’re largely driven by unconscious forces beyond our control. In Willpower Baumeister and Tierney turn this misinformation on its head to reveal self-control as arguably the single most powerful indicator of success. Baumeister discovered that willpower actually has a physical basis to it....

Behavioral economics is the study of decision making, and of the related themes of valuation, exchange, and interpersonal interactions. Using methods from psychology, sociology, neurology, and economics, behavioral economics sheds light one of the most fundamental activities of human life: the decision process. In 24 insightful lectures, you'll learn how behavioral economists look at decision making and explore a set of key principles that offer deep insight into how we evaluate information and integrate different factors to make decisions.

  • Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 39 mins)

At least one-third of the people we know are introverts. They are the ones who prefer listening to speaking, reading to partying; who innovate and create but dislike self-promotion; who favor working on their own over brainstorming in teams. Although they are often labeled "quiet," it is to introverts that we owe many of the great contributions to society--from van Gogh’s sunflowers to the invention of the personal computer.

Would you consider the audio edition of Quiet to be better than the print version?

    Didn't read the print version

What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?

It's got some great ways of viewing your introversion in a positive light.

What does Kathe Mazur bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

It's much easier to find time to read by audiobook rather than read.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

It'd be a documentary and yes.

    Any additional comments?

If you are an introvert give it a listen, a lot of the phrases used in the book are phrases I use all the time and it was really comforting to know it's not unusual or weird. Great read!

  • Mistakes Were Made (But Not By Me): Why We Justify Foolish Beliefs, Bad Decisions and Hurtful Acts

    • UNABRIDGED (9 hrs and 4 mins)

Why do people dodge responsibility when things fall apart? Why the parade of public figures unable to own up when they screw up? Why the endless marital quarrels over who is right? Why can we see hypocrisy in others but not in ourselves? Are we all liars? Or do we really believe the stories we tell? Backed by years of research and delivered in lively, energetic prose, Mistakes Were Made (But Not by Me) offers a fascinating explanation of self-deception.

What did you like best about Mistakes Were Made (But Not By Me)? What did you like least?

It's not really a self help book, more of an analysis of how cognitive dissonance affects us on the personal, relationship, and political level. It's mildly interesting to me, the non-psychiatrist or psychologist.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

    "Makes sense to me"

Which character – as performed by Marsha Mercant and Joe Barrett – was your favorite?

Didn't really have a favorite character

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

...It'd be a documentary and probably not.

    Any additional comments?

Worthy read if you want to understand why people are contradictory and how they justify themselves

What did you love best about Sh-t My Dad Says?

It's got a lot of short to medium length stories which are great if you are like me and jog a lot and you don't listen to audiobooks in one sitting. The stories are hilarious, I even had to stop jogging and just laugh out loud one time.

What other book might you compare Sh-t My Dad Says to and why?

Not sure, maybe Tucker Max's book but on a slightly different subject.

    Which scene was your favorite?

Can't think of one in particular, his baseball stories

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

    See above

    Any additional comments?

    Its a fun book
