Melanie is a very special girl. Dr Caldwell calls her "our little genius". Every morning, Melanie waits in her cell to be collected for class. When they come for her, Sergeant keeps his gun pointing at her while two of his people strap her into the wheelchair. She thinks they don't like her. She jokes that she won't bite, but they don't laugh. Melanie loves school. She loves learning about spelling and sums and the world outside the classroom and the children's cells. She tells her favorite teacher all the things she'll do when she grows up. Melanie doesn't know why this makes Miss Justineau look sad.

    Story

Although the narrator mispronounced some words (a pet peeve of mine) and I would have liked a little more depth into the backgrounds of the characters having to grow up in an apocalyptic society, the story was a really fresh take on a zombie apocalypse story and examines the value of life really well. A good listen, definitely worth the time.

The hope of a better life forces the survivors of the Tower out into the dissolving world around them. The consequences of past battles leave them struggling not only with each other but the remaining fragments of humanity.

Would you listen to We’re Alive: A Story of Survival, the Second Season again? Why?

Yes! Better than the first season, really action packed and the performances and writing were considerably better.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Michael. I love a flawed hero.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The end- what a great cliffhanger!

Heralded as an instant classic of fantasy literature, Maguire has written a wonderfully imaginative retelling of The Wizard of Oz told from the Wicked Witch's point of view. More than just a fairy tale for adults, Wicked is a meditation on the nature of good and evil.

    "Imaginative but fails to connect"

    Story
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Probably not. The writing style is a little cold and makes it very difficult to connect with any of the characters. By the time the book was over, I just didn't care what happened to everyone.

What could Gregory Maguire have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Make his characters more likeable and more 3-dimensional.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

No. Choosing a male actor to narrate a piece with mostly female protagonists doesn't make sense.

Did Wicked inspire you to do anything?

Only to never read another Maguire novel.

    Any additional comments?

This book could have been really exceptional, but the writer spent way too much time on metaphorical ideas and simile descriptions and not nearly enough time on the interactions between the characters and how to make his readers connect with them.

Could you survive on your own, in the wild, with everyone out to make sure you don't live to see the morning? In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by 12 outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV.

What aspect of Carolyn McCormick’s performance would you have changed?

She's too old for the part of a 16-year-old girl. She sounded kind of whiny.

This is a great read for just about anyone, not just teenagers. I truly enjoyed the characters and the story. I didn't want it to end! If you like romance, adventure, and futuristic dystopian stories, this is fantastic!

It's no secret that women have long been overlooked and under-compensated, and while great strides have been made in recent decades, the value placed on women versus their male counterparts is still consistently unbalanced. In Knowing Your Value, bestselling author Mika Brzezinski takes an in-depth look at how women today achieve their deserved recognition and financial worth.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I already have! As a working mom, it is so difficult to balance your "responsibilities" with your dreams. Whether you like Mika or not, her story gives wonderful guidance based on real experiences by successful women and many male employers and it is written in a compelling format that most women will find engaging and easy to follow.

What did you like best about this story?

The inequities in salary based on sex is a fact. This book can help you grasp how to navigate that very rocky road while also giving voice to the frustrations that all working women and moms (whether you are working or not) face on a daily basis.
