"Very Slow and Boring!"
It's very disappointing when you see such wonderful reviews and one or two hours into the book you are thinking, am I listening to the same book? I listened and listened trying to get hooked on something -- the story, the characters, etc. But finally gave up after about 4 hours of boredom. I think a good book should grab your attention within the first hour and this one just did not do that for me. On a positive note, the narrator did a fabulous job and my disinterest was not due to his performance.
"Dog Lovers Will Love This One!"
I enjoyed the story not only because of the murder mystery but also because of the information about "Military/Police Service Dogs" and their training. The interaction and bond between man and dog was very touching and easy to relate to (being a dog lover). The mystery wasn't anything out of the ordinary, but good enough to keep your interest throughout. And don't worry, dog lovers, there's no depressing, Old Yeller ending to spoil it all!
"Dave and Clete are Back!"
I was so glad to see this series continue. The way the last book, prior to this one, ended I wasn't sure if the author decided to continue it or not. This is one of the best in the Dave Robicioux (never can spell that right, sorry!) series and I enjoyed it even more than the others (which I wasn't sure was possible). I love the narrator (Will Patton) and was a little concerned I wouldn't now that he's in the hit series Fallen Skies and takes on his own persona, but that wasn't a problem at all. He quickly became Dave (won't bother trying to spell that last name again) and I couldn't stop listening from beginning to end. Another winner from James Lee Burke who I thank for continuing this series.
"Love This Odd Series!"
I really enjoyed this addition to Dean Koontz's "Odd Series" after reading most of the others. Some of this author's novels are a bit too dark for my tastes but I really enjoy Odd, his sense of humor and outlook on life, as his special talent (seeing dead people) leads him from one adventure to another. He is a very likeable character and the story draws you right in from the beginning, holding your interest until the very end. I highly recommend this series to anyone who likes a bit of science fiction now and then from one of the best science fiction authors.
"Fun House -- Another Fun Addition to this Series!"
I really enjoy these John Ceepak novels and have listened to them all. This one, like the others, has a good mystery for Ceepak and Danny to solve as they entertain us with their quirkly, but very likeable, personalities. If you are looking for a light, fun listen that will keep you interested from the very start, these books will not disappoint.
"Glad I Gave This One A Try!"
I really enjoyed this story. I am not into horror zombie or vampire stories which this is NOT, so I'm glad I gave it a try (based on the excellent reviews). It is actually a very heartwarming story about an unusual zombie (I guess that's sort of an oxymoron) that tries very hard to live in a normal world. You like Stony from the start and the story has enough twists and turns to keep you listening, and listening. It was also told in a light hearted tone interspersed with humor, which I really enjoy. I like happy endings and was a bit afraid this one would disappoint, but it did not. It's so frustrating to listen for 12-15 hours and then have the ending either leave you hanging or depressed. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for something different. I will look forward to listening to another book by this author.
"Not As Good As The First!"
I enjoyed the first book in this series but the second book just did not live up. The characters became way too "abnormal" and the story a bit too corny. I made it about half way through and it just failed to hold my interest. However, if you really enjoy vampire and scifi character love stories, you will probably like this series.
"Just Didn't Keep My Interest!"
I was hoping this author's books were similar to Carl Hiaasen's and was very disappointed that this book anyway, was not near as well written. I kept waiting and waiting for it to get better as the reviews were very good, but I just could not get interested in the story or the characters. I failed to see the humor in the story and finally gave up on it. Maybe other books by this author are more enjoyable and I started out with the wrong one, but I guess I will never know as I would not purchase another one at this time.
"Really Enjoyed This One!"
I enjoy mystery/thrillers and sometimes enjoy a little scifi mixed in with the story. This one was just the right mix. If you have seen and like the new series Alphas, you will really enjoy this book. I liked the main character right away and was drawn right in to the story within the first 5 minutes (another requirement for a really good book). I had a hard time turning it off when I was listening as the story moved right along with enough twists and turns to keep you wondering what would happen next. If you want something a little different, this one is a great choice.
"Couldn't Finish It!"
I purchased this book because of the excellent reviews however, about half way into it I completely lost interest and found that I was not looking forward to turning it back on. I didn't care about the murdered victims, the detective was not very likeable and/or lacked a personality that made him interesting, and there was way too much about the politics of the day. I guess if you love political and social history, you would enjoy this book. I like a mystery/thriller that grabs me from the start and keeps me listening and guessing throughout the book. I also like either likeable or quirky characters with personal side stories that also entertain. This book just did not do any of that for me.
