"Long but worth every word in it!"
Outstanding description of one of the most consequential leaders of the last century. With elegance and detail, the author walks through the life of a man with will and determination in quantities denied to most mortals. Still, Mr. Reid points out the many shortcomings of a man that did not shy away from looking human, however embarrassingly it turned out at times.
While long, this book engaged me to the point of reading a few extra pages passed my predefined reading time. It is full of details exposed through the lens of the very precarious circumstances Great Britain lived throughout the war - first during the London blitz, then during its relegation to a second class power to Russia and the US -.
While the main goal of the book is to reflect a great man into a fair light it also gives a very interesting view into how the British government of the time worked and how sometimes political rivalries dictated national agendas beyond what one would hope democracy allows for.
All in all, it was a great book and one i would recommend to anyone looking for abundant information morphed into fun reading.
"Amazing Story! Well written book!"
More than baseball, this book presents an outstanding portrayal of the qualities required to endure difficulties and work around the most outrages regimes to find success in the hands that are been dealt to us.
Amazing talent or not, Satchel Paige fought until the end and got in life, early or late, what was initially denied to him and others despite of preexisting limiting conditions.
While racial bias and its consequences are powerful drags, lack of personal will to rule over those conditions is also a force to reckon with. Satchel will and determination proved to be the right ingredients to advance his personal interest and, by extension, that of an entire generation of segregated individuals.
At the end, understandably, the scares from all those fights caught up with him sadly turning the living legend into a bitter old man. Health issues probably played a big role in that too.
This is a great book for sports' fans and anyone looking for examples of how others have overcome adversity by fighting with the tools circumstances allow and never finding excuses in themselves or the surrounding conditions.
"Seriously Funny!"
Hilarious must read for any basketball fan or fan of any team sport. I started reading and couldn't stop until i finished (sort of speak).
Mark Titus takes the readers into the inner workings of a top basketball program from the safe angle of one of the biggest, and most committed, bench warmer I've ever heard of. It is absolutely funny and insightful at the same time. No pretensions, no agendas, no over grown egos to put in perspective. This guy is pure in his commitment to stay irrelevant and trick the world around into letting him enjoy the ride with minimal effort from him. Love it!
"Great listen for basketball fans"
Remarkable access to the most amazing team ever to be assembled. Inside scoop into the inner works of various legendary relationships (Mike and Charles, Larry and Ewing, Magic and Larry, The Admiral and his God, etc...). The author had the authority and knowledge to put it together and he did. As a big basketball fan I can only be grateful this work came to be and i had the change to enjoy it while those former superstars are still around. Life dictates that we prioritize more serious matters as the world can be full of challenges and shortcomings. True!
But thanks God we'll always have our memories of the Dream Team to fall back to. :)
"Interesting subject"
A very interesting book on a remarkably important subject. Lies! The authors seem to possess the know-how and put forward a sizable number of examples to that end. Unfortunately they chose to provide a limited amount of details on those examples which impairs the ability of the reader to fully grasp the concept being advanced. I concede that there is a chance that was precisely the goal.
In any event, a good book for non-experts (like me) in the subject of deception and interrogation.
