At age 26, Maarten Troost decided to pack up his flip-flops and move to a remote South Pacific island. The idea of dropping everything and moving to the ends of the earth was irresistibly romantic. But he should have known better.

    Elizabeth says: "HILARIOUS"
    "LOVED this book!"
    Overall

Every aspect of this book engaged me - the historical and cultural tidbits, Maarten's account of his experience on the island, but most of all, the relentless humor and wit with which it was all presented. I found myself wanted it to go on and on!

From the American South to the ancient ruins of Rome, and from the horrors of the Holocaust to the lingering trauma of Vietnam, Beach Music sings with life's pain and glory. Jack McCall, an American expatriate in Rome with his young daughter, is trying to find some peace after his wife's suicide. But when his sister-in-law begs him to return home, he finds himself drawn into a painful, intimate search for the one haunting secret in his family's past that can heal his anguished heart.

Chris says: "loud and lame music"
"Love the book, hate the background music"
    Overall

This is one of my favorite books, so I decided to re-read it through the audio program while commuting. I still love the book (I did miss the parts that were edited out), but the background music really distracted me and annoyed me and overall, detracted from the story. It would have been much better without the weird music.
