While the book is aimed at a YA audience, no adult should turn their nose up.
Rarely do you find a book which has a great story, social commentary and superheros.
You can ( and will) enjoy this, and your teen can listen to it without you worrying about the content.
Brief flashes of the Wizards of UU interspersed with a LOT of pseudoscience loosely based on past Discworld books.. If you are looking for a ton of details on L space, look no further. If you are looking for a Discworld book, look elsewhere.
Classic Pratchett wit great characters, but the narration was poor and the audio quality was AWFUL.!!!!!
Don't waste your credit till they improve the quality
Nothing happens in this book - absolutely nothing. Hunter, Bubba and Quinn are mentioned for about 45 seconds each, and the mentions do not further the story. Dribs and drabs of the Fae, Weres and Vamps come up, but not in any coherent manner. No plot, no hot vampire sex scenes - nothing that led me to enjoy the series was in this book. I don't buy these to hear about Sookie going to Taco Bell!!I have loved the series, but Ms. Harris just phoned this one in. Save your credit - I wish I had. Narration was wonderful though - Johanna Parker is perfect for these books.
I have been to North Korea, and lived several years in the South, so the Koreas have been a bit of a hobby of mine. This book tell it like it is (was) and does so while allowing you to care about the case studies, even when they are being jerks.
I found the end a bit sketchy but that is the nature of a book that tells stories of the living - no neat packages tied up in bows.
With the recent leadership changes in North Korea, this is an especially timely book.
I really enjoyed this book. A nice mixture of hardboiled detective novel with alternate universe fiction and a flip of magic.
The alternate history headlines at the start of each chapter were fun, and the narrator's voices improved the enjoyment of the book by at least 25 %.
I am a long term, die-hard Pratchett fan, and have been looking forward to this book as his health issues make it unlikely that we will have many more. I wanted to love this book, but can only say I liked it. Pratchett didn't really develop anything in this story, but rather used well known characters and often used rivalries to but together a reasonable book, but nothing to move the people of the Disc forward. The internal Vimesian struggle between being a toff and a copper was almost beaten into extinction. The narration was as wonderful as always.
Buy this book - yes, but expect a gentle continuation, nothing amazing.Still, mediocre Pratchett is a Pratchett. Enjoy.
I like Margaret Vissers' books as a rule, but this entire package is just sad. The narrator mispronounces a lot of English food terms, although she has passable French.
The book;'s contents are simply too scholarly and the quality of the narration too poor to allow me to rate any higher. Read this book - yes, but in paper form please.
I loved her earlier book Stiff, and expected that this one would be even more enjoyable - isn't sex better than death???
Unfortunately, this is not the case.
The prose is terse, and there's just no feeling beind the book. Sentences get lost as she tries hard not to be too Anglo-Saxon and use a naughty word
Stiff engaged you because she cared. Bonk does not because she can't seem to care. Haven't been able to bring myself to finish it
Save your credit, but try Stiff.
OK - I really wanted to like this book.
I listened to the first 2 in the series and througly enjoyed them, even with the arena repetition in Catching Fire. I bought it on release day - that's how excited I was.
I anxiously awaited the final book, expecting more of the fantastic writing I had come to expect from the series.
I didn't get it
By the end of the first hour, I was ready to slap Catniss, and simply didn't care about what she did any longer. She sulked and whined and plotted and whined and, oh yes, she whined. She was safe and fed and warm as were her family, but all she could do was complain
Overall the book had potential, especially when we start to see the Rebels and the Capitol blend together in behaviour. Some scenes were quite good. Overall, not nearly up to the potential shown in earlier books. Ends were left hanging, the major tragedy was obvious almost from the start - just disappointing.
