I have read and/or listened to every Preston/Child book. And Crows is one of my favorites, only out ranked by Cabinet of Curiosities. I was happy to see that they finally had an unabridged version available, and with Scott Brick you can't go wrong. Pendergast is the one of best characters in modern thrillers, here he shines. Great Read and Listen!!!!
This is the 6th Larry Correia novel I have listened to and the first non Monster Hunter book. He is on hell of an author, love his characters and the worlds they inhabit. Hard Magic is a noir cyberpunk alternate history novel. You can almost taste the grit and grime as you listen. The story is layered and exciting, I got lost in this world. My only complaint is in some of the choices Bronson Pinchot made in narration. Mainly having the two main characters Jake and Fay, sound so slow and dumb. Now Fay is an uneducated Okee and Jake is soft spoken bull of a man. But they neither are dumb nor slow, in fact they turn out to be the most intelligent ,which Pinchot narration choice on both seems to negate. That being said, he is a great narrator, I like what he does in other books. and by the end of this book he won me over too. All and all a great book. While MHI (which I rate as the best series out there), maybe lighter with B movie fun. Hard Magic is dark and a little macabre, but equally as fun.
First of all the I love the world and characters that Larry Correia has created. And Oliver Wyman narration brings everything to life, GREAT NARRATION!!
The interwoven complex plot, it keeps building and building
He owns these characters
Fun Modern Action Fantasy ( OK that is 4 words, I know :)
The opening chapter is awesome!!!!! Think James Bond and Indiana Jones openings...
Great characterization of Owen, The book is told from Owens point of view, Oliver Wyman nails it!!
Laugh for sure, also you care a lot for all the characters... It's a fun book and series... Movie reference again: Think Die Hard and Predator combined with Big Trouble in Little China.
If you like The Iron Druid Chronicles and/or Dresden Files, then you should check this book out :)
The book is fine but Daniel's narration is off. The characters voices are either too low, Atticus or too high, Oberon... and also the pacing seems a bit off as well. I think I know why, Brilliance Audio did the produced the first 3 books and Random House produces this one. It's almost like listening to a new narrator. I maybe nit picking. The narration on audiobooks can make or break a book.
The relationship between Atticus and his Irish Wolfhound Oberon... So funny and touching.
Atticus O'Sullivan is a great character, smart, funny, a little lighter then say Harry Dresden of The Dresden Files. And Oberon, we can here his thoughts when he is talking to Atticus. If you like fantasy books set in modern days and are a dog lover, you will love this book.
This was my first Luke Daniels book. He does a great job with all the characters, especially Oberon. If you like James Marsters narration you will love Luke Daniels'
I laughed so hard during this book. Both for the Oberon character and Kevin Hearne's geeky Star Wars and Sci-Fi reverences, classic!!
Very comparable to the Dresden and Monster Hunter International books. I think the Iron Druid Chronicles are better.
I don't know why the Pendergast novels aren't movies yet... Preston and Child have created a character whose closest equal is Holmes. From Relic to Cold Vengeance, there is not a better thriller series going . As for the listen, Scott Brick is the man. He is the best storyteller out there.
The building of the plot. Just adds layer after layer. Great pace!!
Brings the characters and action to life.
Highly Recommended !!
This is a great book for anyone interested in the history of WWII. This and it's sequel War and Remembrance are the best historical novels I have ever read or listened to. That being said these books are a bit soapy but the narrative is strong all the was through. Kevin Pariseau does an excellent job. Other then Scott Brick he is the best story teller I have heard in 15 years of listening to audio books ( use to live in Houston, TRAFFIC, 2 hour commute a day!!!) He really brings the characters to life. Highly recommended!!!
This is one second favorite Pendergast novel only behind Cabinet of Curiosities. It's a very suspenseful and entertaining book. And it's also the first book to have Pendergast as the real main character. Rene Auberjonois a perfect job of narration, as always. I wonder why they don't have an unabridged version of Cabinet, Crows and Brimstone, the amount of details left out of the stories are astounding. But that said, it's still a great book,, highly recommended!!!
