This book has just the best of everything. There are so many twists and turns with heartache and happiness, it definitely is an emotional roller coaster. Nicholas Boulton's narration was outstanding! His voice is incredible and is reminiscent of Sean Connery's voice. It has a great story which is missing in some of the romances I've read lately. The main characters in the book are so lovable that I will miss them and will have to return to the book again and again just to keep them in my life. Definitely worth the credit.
I read this book a few years ago and really enjoyed it and was really happy when I saw it available in Audible. What ruined Lord Ruin was the narration. Ms. McDermott's lack of experience is evident and she should try changing her voice for the different characters that are part of the story line. When the narrator is unable to change voices, the reading comes across as flat and monotone. Some really good examples are Anne Flosnik and Susan Duerden whose narration of historical romance books are a listening joy. I hope that Ms. McDermott will continue narrating books as she has an authentic accent. I just hope she will practice the male voices and learn to make each character stand out.
Loretta Chase how come it took so long to get on Audible? All of her books are incredibly well written, and each character has depth beyond what is normally found in romance books. I hope that more of her books will find their way here (especially Lord Perfect, my all time favorite!). I don't want to leave the narration out because that was outstanding too. Thanks to Kate Reading, Ms. Chase's wonderful book was done justice. I hope you will use your credit on this book, you won't be disappointed.
Tessa Dare is one of my new favorites. Her characters are not cookie-cutter perfect. However, her story line is! Also, Carmen Rose was AWESOME! She had all the accents down including the Scottish valet Duncan. Audible, I hope you have plans for the rest of the series because this is too good to miss.
I think the editor sleep through the book. It was waaaaaaay toooooo long! I actually looked at the publishing date of the book to find out if it was an old romance novel published in the days that were not PC. Nope I was wrong, it's a recent publish date. The sex scenes made me cringe; I had to fast forward over those. The narration was breathy and falsely dramatic. I did feel bad for Ms. Kinsolving, the book was so long it almost sounded like she was losing her voice at some points.
I want to say something good about it too. The story might not of been too bad if the editor had done his/her job and cut some scenes and asked Ms. Busbee not to describe everything in such finite detail, like describing the food the butler brought in.
Worth a credit? If you like long, tortuous romance books, hey give it go.
This is a really enjoyable listen. The story is heartfelt and warm. The narration is perfect and Eva Kaminsky's Australian accent is totally believable. This is not a complex romance that has you wondering how the hero/heroine get together. It is sweet and filled with loving romance. Highly recommended.
This is an unforgettable book with unforgettable narration. What was painful for me was the struggle of the characters to achieve peace. Their struggle goes right to the bitter end. Laura Kinsale will be an automatic download for me but when I want a nice, sweet romance, I won't look here. As far as narration goes, Nicholas Boulton is in the top three narrators for romance at Audible if not the top. I hope you won't hesitate listening to this book, especially if you are looking for depth of characters and strength and talent of narration.
Sometimes an old fashioned romance is really what you want. Mary Balogh's books fit the bill. Her characters are generally not perfect like other romance novels but they really touch the wounded parts of ourselves and touch on emotions. They are not "hot", or sexy in a way that is over the top. If this is what you are craving, then I say "go for it!"
This is a book that I have read multiple times I love it so much. When I saw it had been made into an audio book, I just had to get it. I realize that this is not a new book as it was published in 1991 and maybe it is dated to some people but to me it is timeless. When the book opens, it takes place in the American West and it may leave you wondering how it gets to England. Just hang on a little longer, it gets there is a really fun way. I know if you're a sucker for historical romance like I am, you'll love this one.
Also, I think Susan Duerden does a great job narrating and I have loved her voices in multiple books I have purchased. She even captures the male voices really well and is very convincing. Very credit worthy book but remember it is a book that was first published 20 years ago.
Very cute, very nice story. There are some dark sides to be sure but overall a very good yarn. This is a contemporary romance and after the character struggle that we all know and love in romance, a happily ever after. I recommend it, especially if you are looking for something a little lighter.
